It was about a week ago when a showbiz writer for a national daily harshly declared one of the country’s sexiest actor and a rather controversial heartthrob, Sam Milby, as “laos and tuyot na!” “Of course not! Sam Milby is still very popular and has a legion of fans all over the world,” protested the bejewelled matron, Emilia Sorongon Sitjar of Emilia’s Jewelry Collection fame. According to her son Emil, the feisty mother superior is the number one fan of Sam Milby in this part of the country, period.
Truly, Samuel Lloyd “Sam” Lacia Milby, the handsome and charismatic Filipino-American mestizo, is not yet a has-been in Philippine show business the way the Fil-Am Adonis who came before him named Troy Montero faded from Manila’s stellar scene. Lucky Sam Milby fanatics trooped early to the Activity Center of the Abreeza Mall of Davao last November 15 and stayed glued on their seats while waiting patiently for hours for the concert to start. Still, long queues were formed on all the three stories of the mall offering a good view of the activity centre for those unfortunate ones without concert tickets. It was the first time I’ve seen the Abreeza Activity Centre filled to capacity since its grand opening. And yes, it was a proclamation, indeed, that Sam Milby is not laos!
“Sam Milby shares love, light and music in this concert to inspire us all,” claimed Gel Ferrer, Abreeza’s Marketing Director. “This is just our opening salvo to start the holiday season.”
And how Sam Milby wowed the crowd! The adoring fans cheered and screamed so irritatingly and deafeningly just as soon as Sam Milby set his foot on the stage with Sophia Zobel-Elizalde’s Step Dancers performing their mighty best in the opening number with Sam. Seated in the front row with eyes and ears on Sam Milby was Cristina Floirendo Brias who came with her doting father, Honorary Consul to Spain Antonio M. Brias. Businesswoman Dina Pacheco-Mendoza also lovingly accompanied her still school-uniformed daughter to the concert. The serious-looking Sophia Zobel-Elizalde was on the third row watching intently.
Samuel Lloyd “Sam” Lacia Milby is a 27-year-old American citizen from Troy, Ohio, USA. His Filipino mother, the former Elsie Lacia, is from Surigao while his daddy Lloyd is a business entrepreneur from Ohio, USA. Sam became an instant celebrity and heartthrob after he joined the Pinoy Big Brother as a housemate. He moved to the Philippines in 2005 to pursue a successful career as an actor, commercial model, fashion model and recording artist. He is proud being a member of ABS-CBN’s elite (meaning bankable) circle of talents named the Star Magic. He is also ranked in the top 10 of the country’s roster of sexiest men with Piolo Pascual declared as numero uno.
Dubbed as the “well-endowed (!) crooner of popular tunes,” Sam Milby has recorded four albums namely Sam Milby (2006), Love Duets (2009), A Little Too Perfect (2009), and Be Mine (2011). Although he was once the president of his American high school’s glee club, Sam is definitely not in the league of Pinoy crooners like Christian Bautista, Erick Santos and Mark Bautista. Yes, he maybe up to par with his dear friend Piolo Pascual’s singing prowess.
What I find difficult to understand was Sam’s excuse to the Davao audience that he doesn’t have the ability to dance. How then could he have won his awards during his ice skating stint starting at the age of nine years? Sam also excelled in such sports as wrestling, motor cross and golf. And mind you, you don’t instantly acquire those terrific abs he has without working out diligently in the gym.
Sam’s guest performer in his Inspire Concert at the Abreeza Mall was the “Rockoustic Princess of the Philippines” named Josephine “Yeng” Constantino. I am definitely not a fan of her type of so loud music which ranges from Pinoy Rock, Alternative, OPM and Pinoy Pop. Yeng Constantino was the Pinoy Academy’s first ever “Grand Star Dreamer.” As the grand champion, she launched her debut album entitled Salamat which sold 90,000 plus copies to earn her a triple Platinum record award. The hit album was followed with her recording of her original compositions in her later albums such as Journey, Lapit, and Yeng Versions Live with each earning a Gold Record Award. Just this year, Yeng, who reminds me of the young Maribel Aunor of the ‘70s, was proclaimed by the MYX Music Awards as the Favorite Female Artist and the Favourite Celebrity. Among her hit original compositions are Pangarap Lang, Sana, Jeepney Love Story (MYX Favorite Song Award), among others.
