Another stirring box-office winner in Star Cinema’s Forever And A Day, the latest film that ABS-CBN International’s Starry Starry Store is bringing to 10 more U.S. cities this July after a successful run in San Francisco during the last week of June.

Starting July 1, the romantic drama will be shown in: Aiea, Hawaii; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Clifton and Bergenfield, New Jersey. Beginning July 8, it will screen in: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Milpitas, and Union City, California; and in Seattle, Washington.


Forever and a Day held its own against a siege of huge Hollywood summer films that invaded the Philippines week of June 15-19. It landed in the number two spot with an opening day take of P23.27 million, losing only to Green Lantern. The KC-Sam starrer beat the opening day receipts of Mr. Popper’s Penguins and surpassed X-Men: First Class and Super 8.

Director Molina, known for her light but unforgettable romantic comedies with stars like John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Sam Milby, Toni Gonzaga and Sarah Geronimo that have grossed in the hundreds of millions, decided to take a risk with Forever and a Day by coming up with a multi-hanky weeper.

“This is my first serious love story,” Molina said. “While it celebrates love and life, viewers will see in this film characters who realize that even if you’re on top of your game, you really can’t do and have anything you want the way you want it. Other factors will always play a role. Then you discover humility.”

Learning to Believe 
Eugene (Sam Milby) arrives in a top-notch recreational extreme sports facility in Bukidnon, Philippines with only one intention: to forget his problems at work. But when he meets Raffy (KC Concepcion) and as they travel and go on ridiculous and death-defying activities together, they start to form a friendship that goes beyond Eugene’s original plan.

Raffy helps Eugene appreciate himself more and to look at things in a positive way. With Raffy, Eugene begins to believe in himself again. Soon, against his own expectations, he admits to himself that he has fallen in love with this girl.

But life is truly ironic. The moment Eugene expresses his feelings for her, Raffy suddenly starts to push him away. She admits that he can never have her, and she doesn’t want Eugene to hope for a happy ending with her, because she cannot be loved. Now, it is Eugene’s turn to make Raffy believe in love again, just as how she reminded him to believe in himself. But is faith enough to change the course of their destiny? And is his love strong enough for him to sacrifice everything for a relationship that will not last, and for a girl who will leave him soon?

Overcoming Fear 
“Kaya mo bang mahalin ang isang taong alam mong mawawala rin sa ‘yo?” (Can you love someone you know you’d lose soon?) n his latest movie, Forever and a Day, Sam Milby plays Eugene, an alpha male who will finally fall in love, and hard, with a highly desirable woman called Raffy, played by KC Concepcion, who is, unfortunately, saddled with commitment issues.  In short, she’s exactly the kind of woman any competitive, go-get-her alpha male worth his strut was made for. 


And nothing seems to be a more apt metaphor for the young woman who struggles to conquer her fears and the young man who pushes himself to the limit than having them play out their tensions amid the ziplines and obstacle trails in the scenic forests of Mindanao.  

Which suits Sam Milby just fine. While he says “the story is amazing,” Sam is a natural at playing jocks because he is one.  From age nine till 15, he lived with a coach who taught him competitive ice-skating, joined the school wrestling team and competed in motocross races—all before he flew back to the Philippines and turned his life around by joining Pinoy Big Brother.

In the movie, his character dives off cliffs, walks against the wind on a narrow pole suspended above towering trees, jump from one hanging loop to another, plunge into a cold unpredictable basin of water under a hard driving cascade of a tall waterfall, among other stunts.
  
Under pressure
There is an unusually heavy pressure on this movie to become a blockbuster in the Philippines and wherever there are OFWs. For one thing, it is an 18th anniversary presentation of Star Cinema. Known for hit romantic movies, Star Cinema has, for another, also tapped their blockbuster ace Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina for this movie. 

What’s different here, said Direk Cathy who visibly squirms at being dubbed as a blockbuster movie-maker, is that “it doesn’t just talk about love but also of life.” She said that all of her movies may have seemed like fairy tales, but all of it is based on something that is real. “Whenever I make a scene, hindi sasabihin ng audience na imposible.”

More than the kilig stuff, Direk Cathy says the movie “tells us how to love, to hope and to give love, to impart something of yourself.” She admits that she planted the “seed” of this movie’s premise.

The script, said writer Mae Chua, “allowed me to reflect on my life, to measure the thing that I value most in life. It made me pause and rethink life, how to live it, really.”

Interjects Direk: “Sometimes, all it takes is just a day. A day can be like your forever and forever can also happen in a day.” Ang tanong, will you buy that? 

Apparently, her main characters did, after “experiencing” it. 


Most improved 
Sam has done four movies under Direk Cathy, but she says she only came to love Sam in this movie because it was the first time she saw Sam’s character transform and fall in love. 

“I’ve seen him grow,” she says. “I’ve seen how he gave of himself in breathing life to Eugene.” The result, she admits, stunned her, enumerating scenes that she especially loved.

“I just really felt the character, got into the character, and Direk Cathy just allowed me to get into him,” explained Sam when asked where he drew out the emotions he needed for certain scenes.

Direk Cathy says that the growth of Sam’s thespic abilities can be likened to that of John Lloyd Cruz’s, an actor Direk has worked often with and for whom she’s known to have a soft spot.   In reply, Sam said that Direk did prove to him in this movie that although this “forever-in-a-day and whatever-happens-in-a-day-can-affect-you-for-the-rest-of-your-life” thing seemed hard to believe at first, he became a believer after doing the movie.

That gives you an idea of how much Sam Milby became the character he played, which must be why Direk Cathy said she fell in love with Sam here.

Will the audience do the same?  “Whatever happens, we have given it our best, and I think that’s the most important,” Sam hedges.

GOOD FRIENDS KC Concepcion and Sam Milby team up for the first time in the romantic movie “Forever and a Day” directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina under Star Cinema. Sa trailer pa lang ng pelikula, masisilip na natin ang isang kakaibang love story. “It took me a day to fall in love but it will take me forever to say goodbye” ang sabi ng karakter ni Sam.

“Forever and a Day” takes moviegoers to different picturesque destinations like Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro and Lanao del Norte. Although they were shooting their movie, nagsilbi ring tulay ang pelikula para makapag-bonding sina KC and Sam who enjoyed the rapids and the zipline.

Hindi naman maubus-ubos ang mga papuring ibinibigay ng dalawa kay Direk Cathy. Ayon sa abs-cbnNEWS.com, sinabi nina KC at Sam sa kani-lang interview sa DZMM’s Showbiz Mismo na naging maganda ang kinalabasan ng pelikula dahil sa commitment na ibinigay ng kanilang direktor.

Sabi ni KC, “Fan ako ni Direk Cathy. La-ging may twist iyong mga pelikulang ginagawa niya. In this case parang iba iyong attack, iba iyong dating ng feeling sa iyo paglabas mo ng sinehan.”

Ito ang ikaapat na pagsasama nina Sam at Direk Cathy sa pelikula. Nauna na nilang ginawa ang Close to You, You Are the One, at You Got Me na pawang mga naging box-office hits.

Kuwento ni Sam, “Ito ang pang-apat na movie na we’ve been together and sa lahat ng movies na nagawa namin, this one talagang we got the closest. Nag-usap kami kasi for a director to bring out the best in you, dapat malaman niya lahat ng bagay tungkol sa iyo, to know how to motivate you. Talagang nag-usap kami. She got to understand me more.”
Patuloy na namamayagpag sa takilya ang pelikula. Masaya sina KC at Sam dahil sa positive reviews na natanggap ng kanilang pelikula on its first screening day. “Marami nga pong nagsabi na talagang gustung-gusto nila kung paano ang attack sa kanila ng pelikula kasi hindi siya iyong tipo ng pelikula na masasabi mong light drama or nakakaiyak, malungkot ang pelikula. Parang hindi mo masabi kung ‘Paano ba ako tinamaan ng pelikulang ito?’ Iba iyong pakiramdam so parang nakakatuwang isipin,” KC says.

May iniwang isang katanungan ang karakter ni KC sa pelikula: “Kaya mo bang mahalin ang isang taong alam mong mawawala rin sa iyo?” Kayo, ano ang sagot ninyo?

After the successful showing of Forever and a Day at the box office, director Cathy Garcia-Molina says she has learned to deal with the pressure of coming out with a hit after doing previously successful projects like A Very Special Love and My Amnesia Girl. “Every movie kasi parang natatanong sa akin ito and opo, merong pressure and I would like to forget about the pressure kasi I’d rather concentrate on how to tell a good story again. Kasi totoo yung pressure, hindi masaya pagdating sa pressure ng expectations andsana more than to expect that this will be another blockbuster movie, sana mas ma-expect nila na ito’y isang magandang pelikula. Sana it will be a movie that will inspire you again. Ang major goal ko is for the viewer to come out of the cinema loving life again, having a different look on life,” she shares.

Direk Cathy says that people from all walks of life will be able to relate to the story of Forever and a Daybecause it deals with a universal theme. “I think in one way or another, I think each one of us has experienced loss, whether it be a break-up or in any form.Nawalan na tayo. And pareho silang mawawalan dito. Mawawalan at makakabangon. And I think ito yung pinakagusto ko about the film, more than it tells us about the kilig stuff sa love story, it tells us how to love and it tells us how to hope,” she explains. Direk also shares how proud she is of the work lead stars Sam Milby and KC Concepcion put in. “They were very good in this film. I was surprised, meron akong mga favorite scenes nila na talagang wow, sabi ko, artista itong dalawang ito,” she admits.

After successfully working on projects with the then untested tandems of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, Direk Cathy says she is not bothered about whether the public would accept of reject the Sam-KC pairing. “It’s always naman a fear ‘di ba kung meron kang bagong tandem, hindi mo alam kung tatanggapin ng manunuodeh. Ang lagi ko lang sinasabi sa kanila, hindi naman kayo tatanggapin bilang kayo, tatanggapin kayo bilang yung characters niyo. So for as long as ang makikita nila onscreen is not you but the characters, sa tingin ko magwo-work. Naniniwala ako na yung kuwento ang magdadala ng bawat pelikula. So kahit sinong ilagay natin na artista yan, kung maganda yung kuwento at nakakakilig, papatok din,” she recalls.

The talented director also admitted that her latest movie does bear certain similarities to the popular romantic Hollywood drama A Walk to Remember. “Yes, I must admit there is. There are factors that are pareho. Lahat naman I think ng love stories may pagkakapareho but it was told differently and the characters are different soibayung journey, iba yung point ng pelikula. Even if it talks about the same thing,” she explains.

The film is an exposition on acceptance more than it is about dealing with grief, and in more ways, this is an unusually brave project for a mainstream production bent on concessions that usually dumb down their audience.

KC Concepcion sheds off her theatrical affectations, the vicarious habits that used to underline her distracting enthusiasm displayed in Joyce Bernal’s banal effort “For The First Time” and Joel Lamangan’s “When I Met U”. In Maryo J. de los Reyes’ “I’ll Be There”, KC was able to flaunt flashes of controlled brilliance, but “Forever and a Day” ushers an inspired chapter when the Megastar’s daughter is finally proving her worth as an actress in serious contention. And though it doesn’t seem so, Concepcion is really just three years in the business, though we presume to have known her forever. Her mother wasn't this proficient on her fourth film (Eddie Garcia's "Cross My Heart"). Can you imagine what she is capable of doing on her 10th year in the business?

As the suffering Raffy, KC pulls away from the usual broad strokes integral in Filipino melodrama. There was a degree of subtle constancy, an unwavering dedication to her character. She never faltered. In fact, her inherent ardor is quite palpable from her facial expression to her body movement. If you’ve never heard of graceful grief, this is how it’s done. And if Raffy fails to tug you in the heart strings, then there is something very wrong with your affect. Suddenly, KC is doing something right.

Sam Milby does well himself as the embattled corporate planner. His motivations were quite understandable, and his concerns thrusted the gravely battered “male ego” to the fore. Gone are Milby’s heavy handed, ultra-emphatic deliveries. He has truly evolved into one of his generation’s most dependable actors (see "Third World Happy" for proof). It also helps that he generates a simmering chemistry with KC.

Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro provide a dreamy backdrop to the emotional predicaments experienced by the protagonists. They perfectly provide a tableau that helps move and highlight the narrative. After this, who wouldn’t want to visit that side of Shangrila?

Director Molina is truly the modern-day exponent of cinematic quotations, but there’s a line in the film that doesn't sit well with us. While Raffy sits beside Eugene, she then looks down, gazes at her shoes and says, “Shoes are the least appreciated things in this world,” which I beg to disagree. We're aware that she was spewing commentary on the seeming expendability of life. But shoes? If that were true, we wouldn’t have an Imelda Marcos. I wouldn’t be buying a pair once a month. Moreover, there wouldn’t be a Eugene Silvero in a movie like “Forever and a Day”. Shoes are indeed much appreciated; people slave away just to plan on buying one. Despite this minor quibble, there are other note-worthy lines. When Raffy talks about the helplessness of her condition, she likens this to “Parang nananakawan… nadaya, even if you’ve done everything right.” Bad things indeed happen even to good people.

The movie is chivalrous in many levels, and we have to tip our hat to Molina’s audacious foray into movie world’s Neverland. Yes, you won’t find a Filipino movie as indomitable in its commitment to delve into the realm of mortality, bereavement and acceptance! It has moments of unabashed mawkishness – the protracted spiels at Raffy’s bedside, but we understand its exigency. More than anything, the film dispenses lessons that most cinematic stories omit or decide to ignore. When life threatens to make a sudden halt, we still try to make the best of our remaining hours. Regardless of its brevity, life is still a precious gift.

For a change, I won’t complaint about the film’s B-rating from this dubious organization called C.E.B.

Box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina got the surprise of her life when she learned that she will be doing a film project with KC Concepcion and Sam Milby. She was supposed to do a separate project for KC and another for Sam, with different screen partners. When Star Cinema presented to her the idea of doing the first team-up movie of Sam and KC, she thought of this love story titled “Forever and a Day,” which is her concept.

“This is a movie that talks not only about love but also about life and the love for life,” says Direk Cathy at the presscon of “Forever and A Day” and adds that, “This is my first na serious love story, hindi lang basta pangkilig. This is more than just a kilig love story.”

This is a film that celebrates the beauty of love and life, a movie that embarks upon the idea of eternal love, a compelling love story told. “Sometimes, all it takes is just a day. A day can be like your forever and forever can also happen in a day,” says Direk Cathy.

The story is about a man (Sam) who pushes himself to the limits, a man who is always up for the challenge. He is proud. He only lives for himself. He then meets a woman (KC) one day, a woman who is more cautious in life, a woman who teaches him to embrace life, love and all its smallest blessings. Together they take the journey that teaches them to control their fears and the humility and courage to accept things that one cannot control. But will love prevail even if destiny tries to prevent it from happening?

Direk Cathy says it became her problem when she learned that Sam and KC are good friends in real life. Even before the two started the movie, they have been friends.

“We can’t say that we even became closer while doing the film because we’ve always been close,” says Sam. “During the first few days on the set, Direk Cathy would get mad at us because ang daldal namin pareho so direk told us na huwag kaming mag-uusap sa set,” related KC.
The two are such close friends that they ca
n’t see themselves as lovers. Sam and KC could not look at each other and feel that they are lovers. “It was kind of difficult for me,” says Direk Cathy. “But I always tell them that they are not the ones in love onscreen but the characters they are playing. As long as they become the characters, Eugene can fall in love with Raffy and Raffy can fall in love with Eugene.”

Of all the movies they did together (this is Sam’s fourth film under Direk Cathy), Sam said this is the one that he got closer to his director. “This is the first time we did get close and I really gave her everything, to the role. So if ever you’d say my acting is good, I should give direk Cathy credit for that. Plus, it has an amazing story so it helped me in giving life to my role.”

For her part, this is KC’s first project with Direk Cathy. “I haven’t done too many movies since I started acting three years ago. The first thing that Direk Cathy asked me was to trust her. And that helped me a lot because nabigyan niya ako ng lakas ng loob and it boosted my confidence, especially with my acting. I know there is room to grow and I can do so much. I hope that the people would see how much I have given in terms of acting.”
Did KC have to look back on her past loves so she could relate to a scene? “I didn’t have to do that. It’s really more on the scene. Hindi naman po pinaplano iyon. Siguro po kung anong emotion ang dumating while I am reading the script or while we are taking the scene. I could probably look back on an experience that had happened in real life. But I really got attached to the character of Raffy. I need not reminisce on what happened in the past because I relate to the scene,” explains KC.

For his part, Sam says: “Every actor has a different method in taking on a scene. There are actors who use their personal experiences. Pero sa akin, hindi gumana iyon and direk knows that. I can’t use any personal experience. If it happens, then it happens. What I do is I study the character. But I really have to say that the story is amazing. I just really felt the character and found ways to make it good with regards to my performance.”

With Forever and a Day, Direk Cathy hopes to present a new tandem in KC and Sam. She knew some people might not see the chemistry in Sam and KC. “But why don’t we give it a try? You’ve got to see this film to believe that it is possible. Sam and KC are really good in this film. They are a revelation. I got more than what I expected. I just admire their professionalism.”

To trigger the adventurous sides of Sam and KC’s characters plus elicit a strong romantic flavor, both actors had to do the extreme water sports themselves. This included doing the zipline (and all of its 28 takes) and whitewater rafting! But Sam and KC were unfazed. Both of them even had to dress-down and hardly wore make-up at all, a departure for their glammed-up screen roles in the past. Both indeed have gone out of their comfort zones, all for delineating what could be career-defining roles of their lives. The Sam we never saw and the KC we never knew.

Despite its unapologetically elegiac tone, there’s something reassuring and inspiring about Cathy Garcia-Molina’s “Forever and A Day,” starring KC Concepcion and Sam Milby. It encourages viewers to keep fighting for what’s important in their lives—even beyond frustrations, failures or the onus of death.

Molina’s five-hanky weeper begins with a sprightly tone that belies its serious subject matter: Distraught Raffy (Concepcion) meets problematic Eugene (Milby) at a recreational sports facility cum theme park in Bukidnon that offers tourists an opportunity to indulge in extreme sports.

They bicker and flirt as they go from one challenge to another—but, for them, those dangerous activities represent more than just regulated games of chance. The Dickensian irony of their situation isn’t lost on them, especially when they realize that—they really like each other!

Uncompromising

Truth is, the stubbornly uncompromising Eugene and the cowardly Raffy are facing forks in their respective roads: He’s on the verge of losing his job as a shoe designer, and she’s just learned that her lymphoma has already metastasized—and she refuses to continue with the chemotherapy sessions!

It’s the best of times and the worst of times for the couple. As their fondness for each other grows, they glow in the comforting embrace of their love. But, when Eugene loses out on a coveted project and is suddenly confronted with the ugly and debilitating manifestations of Raffy’s illness, reality strikes him hard. Is their love worth keeping? Do miracles still happen?

Molina should be commended for successfully steering her risky drama without acquiescing to the studio’s penchant for crowd-pleasing endings at the expense of believability. She doesn’t really need to, because, except for the turgid confrontations that result in ponderous schmaltz in the film’s third quarter, the movie effectively avoids an overlay of kooky comedy or tear-jerking mush—which is evident in its beautifully conceived first act, which is energized further by the palpable sparks generated by the chemistry of its beautiful lead stars.

Dark theme

Because of its dark theme, the movie naturally yanks at the proverbial heartstrings, but does so in a stirringly muted manner. KC delivers the finest performance of her career to date as she conveys her character’s burdens with quiet grace. Her portrayal is finely nuanced, but doesn’t feel cloying or technically-calibrated. She doesn’t say much when she cries, but her face says it all.

Fresh from his moving turn in EJ Salcedo’s “Third World Happy,” Milby more than holds his own opposite his lovely costar in a role that plays well to his emerging strengths as an actor. Now, if he can only straighten out his Tagalog…

FOREVER AND A DAY Stars rave on Forever and a Day!

Big crowd, big celebrities, big event! The premiere night of Star Cinema’s 18th ANNIVERSARY offering “Forever and a Day” was indeed a smashing success! As early as mid-afternoon of June 14th, movie audiences eagerly waited at the cinema 10 lobby of SM Megamall to witness the most-highly anticipated movie event of the season. The venue dressed-up in grand Star Cinema fashion was graced by top celebrities beginning 7PM which thrilled the huge crowd to no end. Though some of the invited celebrities opted to go to the cinema discreetly by not walking down on the red carpet, the fans inside were delighted to see that their favorite stars are with them.

As the lights dimmed and the screening proper started, the entire cinema watched “Forever and a Day” in sheer viewing pleasure. A light romance with some “kilig” and “nakakaiyak” parts in it, the next (almost) two hours was all worth it. Here’s what they’ve got to say: 

From top matinee idol and KC’s current beau, Piolo Pascual, “Sobrang galing nila pareho. Nadala ka from beginning till the end.” Piolo must have been very proud for his girlfriend KC and good friend Sam. Obviously impressed with the movie’s cast and production team, “Umagang kay Ganda” host, Donita Rose had this to say “Everybody did a good job in the film!” while beauty queen Miriam Quiambao quipped, “Their acting was very believable.” Appreciating the film’s merits, actress Gladys Reyes said “Talagang quality movie!”. Much-loved comedienne Pokwang was touched, “Napakahusay ng istorya.”. Taking a more profound point of view of the film, Carrie Concepcion shared her thought “It teaches you that life really conquers everything.” Kim Chiu seemed to be on a high in saying “Nakakainlove, nakakainspire.” while “It’s very very touching.” was what teen actor Matteo Guidicelli had to say. Undoubtedly affected, Maja Salvador retorted “Nakakaiyak ng sobra yung istorya.”. Toni Gonzaga couldn’t have said it any other way and nonchalantly expressed her very honest opinion, “Palupasay na yung pag-iyak ko! it’s a beautiful masterpiece!”.

Well, they have spoken. Indeed Star Cinema scored anew with “Forever and a Day”. An endearing, relatable love story we will all be delighted to see. Starring KC Concepcion and Sam Milby and directed by box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina, “Forever and a Day” is currently showing in over 100 theaters nationwide. Would you dare miss it?

During the premiere night of Forever And A Day,director Cathy Garcia-Molina admitted that she was really nervous of how moviegoers would respond to Sam Milby and KC Concepcion’s first movie team-up. She had been very vocal about being challenged to bring out the best in her two lead stars, especially because this is her first time to do a romantic drama. “Hindi na nga ako tumitingin sa audience eh. Natakot ako sa reaction ng tao. Pero napansin ko, they were really quiet and attentive during the emotional scenes of KC and Sam’s characters. Natuwa ako kasi ibig sabihin they were trying to listen [to the dialogue] and I felt that they really appreciate KC and Sam's performance. If I may say so, na-showcase naman talaga yung galing nila and they have all the right to be called actors.”

True to her word, Direk Cathy made sure that Sam’s onscreen presence would have a similar impact to that of John Lloyd Cruz in A Very Special Love. At the same time, viewers would be surprised with the depth of emotion that Sam has given his role. “Gwapo talaga siSam and magaling ang director of photography ko, si Dan Villegas. Pero extraordinary nga ang pagkagwapo niSam sa pelikula, may glow. I think nakatulong na gusto niya yung story of Eugene. Plus, he knows that he needs this project. He knows that he has to give more kasi pang-anim niya ng pelikula ito at pang-apat na niya sa akin [na siya ang bida]. So I’m sure naghahanap na din yung tao na, ‘Ano naman ang pwede mo mong mabigay?’ And I believe hindi kayo mabibigo. Sam was able to give more than what he has given in the past.”

Direk Cathy was equally proud of KC whom she had to be very strict with. Since it was their first time to work together, she told KC that she’s the type of director who doesn’t give special treatment even to showbiz royalties. “I am so happy kasi hinayaan niya akong i-control siya, i-guide siya. Malaking bagay sa aming mga director na pumapayag ang artistang magpadirek. Kasi ang tanging mabibigay ko kay KC yung emotion—dito ka manggagaling, dito ka pupunta. And I am so happy kasi yung ibang nuances sa kanya na galing. I am glad na lumalabas na yung naturalesa niya bilang artista. I didn’t have to spoon-feed everything. Nung umpisa ganon e, pero nung pumasok na siya sa character niya, naging natural na yung flow ng emotions nila.”

When asked what’s next after filming Forever And A Day, Direk Cathy revealed that she’s open to do more serious films in the future. “Basta huwag lang family drama, yun ang iniiwasan ko eh. Pero heavy drama na love stories, okay sa akin,” she beamed.
