"Sam Milby shares what he loved about staying in New York City"

6/10/2012 1:21 AM

by: Rhea Manila Santos

All set to start work on his upcoming teleserye Against All Odds with KC Concepcion and Judy Ann Santos, Sam Milby said he is happy with the status of his life right now both professionally and personally. Although admittedly single, Sam said he is enjoying just meeting a lot of new people, especially when he auditioning while he was in New York earlier this year.

Sam admitted he was too busy focusing on his auditions there that he did not get the chance to really see the sights. The 28-year-old actor said he enjoyed being an ordinary civilian during his short stay abroad. “What I loved about New York is that ang daming artista dun na sila din yung mga sikat na sikat na artista like Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman they live there too pero naglalakad-lakad lang sila dun and no one bothers them… It’s like everything is all there in one city. There’s people from all walks of life, sobrang diverse ng city. It’s inspiring,” he said.

Now that he’s back in town, Sam is busy with interviews and out-of-town shows. He even gave his opinion on the secret to staying together in showbiz, which for him is to not make everything public and to keep constant communication. “I think it’s just something you have to agree on as a couple, what you want to share with the public and what you don’t want to share. Pero pag may away or breakup, I think you can’t really decide that so it’s more of understanding each other,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Acoustic heartthrob Sam Milby has returned to the country with a content heart not only because he has been able to take some time to pursue his “American dream” but also because he’s able to fulfill a wish—to find new love in the Big Apple.
“I did meet somebody, nakilala ko siya [within] a month and a half [of my stay there]…” Milby told PEP in a report posted on May 18.
Although he wasn't trying to hide that he "likes" her, Milby was a little careful in dishing out details about the lucky girl so as not to preempt whatever it is that could bloom between them.
“Hindi ko pa puwedeng sabihin ang name niya kasi we’re just friends, pero gusto ko siya... ‘pag may something na talaga,” he assured, while adding, “Mahirap naman kasi nandito na ako ulit tapos nasa New York siya.”
According to him, his mystery girl is of Irish, German, Dutch and Filipino descent and is a model in New York City.
“Hindi pa siya nakakapunta dito sa Pilipinas, pero nag-modelling na siya sa SG [Singapore],” the singer-actor related.
Milby shared he was attracted to her because of her values.
“She’s a college graduate but… in modelling, there’s a lot of things that thay want you to do pero hindi niya ginagawa ‘cause she doesn’t believe it to be right—and I just really appreciate that,” he enthused.
Aside from being a “very driven” person with “a lot of discipline,” Milby also described her as someone kind and beautiful.
Father and son bonding
He might not have snagged a deal in NYC but aside from meeting someone, another good thing he experienced in the US is being able to spend quality time with his father.
Milby shared that his father flew all the way from Ohio to New York to spend time with him for four, full days.
“’Yun siguro sa buong buhay ko ang pinaka-bonding namin kasi workaholic talaga ang tatay ko,” the 27-year-old Kapamilya talent recalled.

Sam Milby returns to do a teleserye; reveals meeting a model in New York that he really likes

Sam Milby on trying his luck in New York: “I can say it’s very worth it. It’s because of the fact that it was a great experience, all the auditions and the great feedbacks—and I’m going back. I know there are lots of auditions na mami-miss ko habang nandito ako, but I feel in a way different from when I left here. I just have more desire [to work] and I have more confidence."

“Masaya! I’m so happy to be back!

“So, babalik pa ako dun, likely around January of next year.

"May mga ongoing auditions ngayon, but yung main chunk is during those three months.”

“I can say it’s very worth it,” sambit niya.

“It’s because of the fact that it was a great experience, all the auditions and the great feedbacks—and I’m going back.

“I know there are lots of auditions na mami-miss ko habang nandito ako, but I feel in a way different from when I left here.

“I just have more desire [to work] and I have more confidence.

“I think there’s misconception of things kasi wala akong balak dati na pumunta sa States to try it out there—but it came to me.

“There was a network that liked me and that got me an agency there, so I’m thankful sa lahat ng nangyari.”

THE AUDITIONS.

Kuwento ni Sam, “It’s all for the major networks, mga lalabas na shows sa CW, ABC, CBS, and mayroong isa sa HBO—and it went really well.

“Nagulat ako kasi sa… sa agency, I met Brooklyn Decker, kasama siya sa movie ni Adam Sandler, Just Go With It, at sa Battleship—bago itong pelikula na lalabas.

“’Tapos when I was at the audition, may nakita akong guy, parang familiar yung mukha.

“I was with a group of people, nag-uusap kami, ‘tapos nalaman ko na siya pala yung lead sa Entourage—si Adrian Grenier!

“Dun, kahit sikat na sikat, nag-o-audition din.

“I’m sure kapag may pangalan na, you get favoritism, of course.

“But still, if you read dun sa magazines, there are others who are not sikat, but they’ve done works, they get the jobs more than the ones that you would think they can get it.

“They all go through auditions and I think that’s actually fair ‘coz it gives everyone a fair chance.”

BONDING WITH HIS DAD.

“Pumunta siya sa New York for four days.

“Yun siguro sa buong buhay ko ang pinaka-bonding namin kasi workaholic talaga ang tatay ko.

“I just realized that we had all the time to just enjoy our time together.

“Nag-usap kami, I’ve got to learn more about yung pamilya ko sa side ng tatay ko.

“He’s not yet retired… mayroon pa siyang negosyo.

“He’s turning 78 this October… masipag siyang magtrabaho.”

“Ito ang pinakamatagal na wala ako in the seven years that I’ve been here.

“I have a family here, too—Star Magic, Cornerstone… Nene, my PA [personal assistant] has been with me for more than six years. “...

SAM MILBY RETURNS TO MANILA AFTER NY AUDITIONS

By Don Tagala, ABS-CBN North America Bureau
May 14, 2012
NEW YORK CITY – Sam Milby is going back home to the Philippines tomorrow — after months of almost non-stop auditions on U.S. TV show pilots.
He will be acting in a new soap opera and possibly a movie while he’s in the Philippines—as well as record a new album.
But he said, that doesn’t mean he’s giving up his Hollywood dream.
Milby said, “There were a lot of good things that happened to me while I was here. When I come back here, I will be better prepared.”
Milby said his experience in New York boosted his confidence as an actor and got his foot in the door —
Good enough reasons, he said, for him to come back and try his luck again next casting season.
He said, “All the casting directors are really noticing me, liking me, and that’s a big thing.”
ABC Entertainment Executive Director for Primetime Casting, Marci Phillips said auditioning is the first step. Building relationships with casting directors is next.
Phillips said, “Making somebody into a huge TV star takes a while. But everybody that meets him and everybody that auditions him love him. The building blocks are all there; so we’re very excited about him.”
Phillips said she is not worried about Milby leaving New York for a few months to take care of business back home.
Philips said, “Whenever he’s comfortable coming back, the sooner the better for us because we want to get him in on everything.”

Sam joins Anna Maria, Corbin Bleu in NYC show

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo The Philippine Star Updated April 16, 2012 12:00 AM

In the first major concert of Godspell star Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (left), Sam (right, photographed at New York’s Central Park) is doing a guest performance with Cobin Bleu (center), Anna Maria’s fellow Disney baby and High School Musical star. The concert, set for May 7, will be mounted onboard Hornblower Hybrid.

If Sam Milby keeps the three-month deadline he has given himself to try his luck as an actor in the US, maybe he won’t come home totally empty-handed. Did he bag a role from any of the auditions that he was reported to have taken? Uhm, not really. So far, the only project he has clinched is as a special guest in Anna Maria Perez de Tagle’s first major concert on May 7 onboard the Hornblower Hybrid, a cutting-edge boat by the world-famous Hornblower Cruises & Events, together with High School Musical star Corbin Bleu.

Sam said before he left that he would be away for three months which is much too short for any talent dreaming Hollywood to gain considerable ground. You see, competition out there is a hundred times stiffer (and far more cutthroat) than that in the local entertainment industry where more premium is put on looks than in talent. You have to compete not just with dozens but thousands of aspirants from around the world. And you must have the right connections.

So far, Sam’s only connection is Anna Maria who has become his friend and text-mate since their first meeting two years ago during a Star Magic event in California.

“That friendship was renewed recently when they met again in New York City where Sam is temporarily based while auditioning for prospective Hollywood projects,” said Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre in an exclusive dispatch.

"Sam finally meets Godspell star Anna Maria"

FUNFARE UPDATE By Ricardo F. Lo The Philippine Star Updated March 19, 2012 12:00 AM

Sam Milby at Godspell’s Filipino night with Anna Maria...

For the first time in the history of Broadway, a major musical hosted a Filipino Night in honor of its two cast members — Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and George Salazar — and the large Filipino-American community they proudly represent.

Godspell, the Stephen Schwartz smash on Circle in the Square Theater, tied up with the Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce headed by Butch Meily (president) and John Howley (director), and the Philippine Consulate General in New York led by Consul General Mario de Leon Jr., to hold a star-studded Filipino party at Manhattan’s famed sushi bar and lounge, Bamboo 52.

In his flash report, Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre said that the bigwigs and cast of Godspell that includes Hunter Parrish, Telly Leung, Wallace Smith, Uzo Aduba, Morgan James, and Lindsay Mendez came in full force and mingled with Fil-Am dignitaries and members of the press.

That was the event where Sam Milby finally met Anna Maria.

“Sam’s presence definitely added luster to the celebration,” added Edmund. “It was Sam’s first public appearance since moving to the Big Apple early February for a three-month stay while auditioning for prospective acting projects. Looking like he just stepped out of the pages of GQ in his ‘suit no tie’ look, Sam was a perfect escort for Anna Maria who was glowing in a sophisticated Oliver Tolentino lavender dress made of piña fabric.”

Sam also got to meet the Godspell cast and the family and friends of Anna Maria, and eagerly posed for photographers while he himself became an added attraction to the gathering.

Anna Maria’s mom Evelyn Perez de Tagle...
Consul Elena Maningat said she was surprised to see that Sam, who she thought was “already gorgeous” on TV and big screen, is even more handsome in person. “Pang-Hollywood na talaga” was how Consul Maningat described Sam.

After the hour-long party overflowing with sushi and drinks, all guests headed to the nearby theater to catch the 8 p.m. run of the high-energy musical based on the parables of Jesus in the Gospel According to Matthew.

Consul Zaldy Patron, who watched with his wife, said the Daniel Goldstein-directed musical did not disappoint in providing great entertainment filled with touching and funny scenes, brilliant singing and acting, and the powerful message Godspell brings every night to hundreds of people.

Lorenzo Valdes, a New York Fil-Am, said Anna Maria’s Day By Day rendition is for him the “major highlight” of the show. “It’s always the song people are humming as they leave the theater,” Edmund quoted him as saying. “But everything is great in the show like the set, the costumes and props and the music, of course.”

Even Sam couldn’t help but gush about the musical and tweeted it right away:

“Went in not knowing anything about it & I’ve never laughed so much watching a musical. Great job @AnnaMariaPdT & the whole cast of Godspell.”

After the curtain call that received an extended standing ovation, Anna Maria and George addressed the Fil-Am media during a talkback session hosted by the beauteous kababayan, L.A. host Janelle So (an occasional contributor to The STAR).

Edmund noted that of the 10 cast members of Godspell, only Anna Maria hasn’t missed a single performance since the show opened to previews in October 2011, and to the general public the following month.

“Anna Maria is perfection,” remarked George.

The granddaughter of the legendary Filipino actress-singer Sylvia La Torre revealed that doing Godspell, though physically exhausting, is pure fun and joy for her and the whole cast so much so that they feel like they’re just playing on stage.

“I used to bring Anna Maria to my shows,” recalled Sylvia in an interview with Funfare when she came home two years ago. “At age two, aba, kumakanta-kanta na ang batang ‘yan.”

...."When heartthrob Sam Milby visited Maharlika recently, the restaurant's resident drink mixologist Enzo Lim made a special mojito drink named "Sam Milby Swizzle."

The "Sam Milby Swizzle" which features Tanduay Rhum is said to be the next hit drink at Maharlika.

"Wow, I taste good," Milby said.

"We’re gonna put it on a reserve menu. It’s gonna be on a menu of drinks that are gonna be I guess little more difficult to get, a little higher price because of the ingredients. This one as long as we have Tanduay, we can make it," Lim said.

Maharlika was also featured on NBC's "1st Look", a lifestyle program that gives viewers a taste of the hottest restaurants and trendiest travel destinations in the US. Host Ali Fedotowsky, also known as 2010's The Bachelorette, recently visited the restaurant to do a feature on it.

"Sam Milby chasing American dream can be stressful "

SAM MILBY: CHASING AMERICAN DREAM CAN BE STRESSFUL

March 8.,2012

By Don Tagala, ABS CBN North America Bureau
NEW YORK, NY – It’s been a month since Fil-Am actor and singer Sam Milby moved to New York to chase his American dream. Milby wants to become a star in mainstream US television. He has gone through nine auditions for roles in TV pilots for major networks and is now waiting to hear from casting agents and directors.
“Yes it is stressful. I hear good things and good feedback, but I wonder, am I going to get a call back?” Milby said.
As he anxiously awaits the coveted good news, he is now considering enrolling in acting classes & workshops in New York City to further hone his talent.
Milby has also moved out of his Brooklyn flat and transferred to a smaller but more expensive apartment in SOHO, Manhattan’s shopping district.
But even in this busy neighborhood, Milby stands out in the crowd.
“I can’t believe it, out of nowhere in the whole world in SOHO, we see Sam Milby,” tourist Roxy Medina from Sydney, Australia said.
“We wish Sam Milby the best, I know that he’s been in a lot of Filipino things already, so he’s going to be big in America too. We wish him all the best. He makes us Filipinos proud,” Annie Antonio said.
While Milby has been getting nothing but support from his fans, some critics say making it in Hollywood is easier said than done.
“It seems impossible to break into Hollywood. But even if nothing happens this year, I’m not going to give up,” Milby said.
The actor who became known in the Philippines says, he still believes that something good will come out of his journey.
“I already have the step ahead of being with such a good agency and that in itself is hard to find. So If I have such a good agency that believes in me, it’s just maybe the right project has not come for me yet this season,” Milby said.
