Sam, KC, Direk Cathy score a winner in “Forever and a Day”
ABS-CBN’s Starry Starry Store brings current top Filipino film to 10 U.S. cities this July
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 01, 2011 – Put top actor-host-models Sam Milby and KC Concepcion together with box-office champion director Cathy Garcia-Molina and what do you get?

Another stirring box-office winner in Star Cinema’s Forever And A Day, the latest film that ABS-CBN International’s Starry Starry Store is bringing to 10 more U.S. cities this July after a successful run in San Francisco during the last week of June.

Starting July 1, the romantic drama will be shown in: Aiea, Hawaii; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Clifton and Bergenfield, New Jersey. Beginning July 8, it will screen in: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Milpitas, and Union City, California; and in Seattle, Washington.

Forever and a Day held its own against a siege of huge Hollywood summer films that invaded the Philippines week of June 15-19. It landed in the number two spot with an opening day take of P23.27 million, losing only to Green Lantern. The KC-Sam starrer beat the opening day receipts of Mr. Popper’s Penguins and surpassed X-Men: First Class and Super 8.

Director Molina, known for her light but unforgettable romantic comedies with stars like John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Sam Milby, Toni Gonzaga and Sarah Geronimo that have grossed in the hundreds of millions, decided to take a risk with Forever and a Day by coming up with a multi-hanky weeper.

“This is my first serious love story,” Molina said. “While it celebrates love and life, viewers will see in this film characters who realize that even if you’re on top of your game, you really can’t do and have anything you want the way you want it. Other factors will always play a role. Then you discover humility.”

Learning to Believe
Eugene (Sam Milby) arrives in a top-notch recreational extreme sports facility in Bukidnon, Philippines with only one intention: to forget his problems at work. But when he meets Raffy (KC Concepcion) and as they travel and go on ridiculous and death-defying activities together, they start to form a friendship that goes beyond Eugene’s original plan.

Raffy helps Eugene appreciate himself more and to look at things in a positive way. With Raffy, Eugene begins to believe in himself again. Soon, against his own expectations, he admits to himself that he has fallen in love with this girl.

But life is truly ironic. The moment Eugene expresses his feelings for her, Raffy suddenly starts to push him away. She admits that he can never have her, and she doesn’t want Eugene to hope for a happy ending with her, because she cannot be loved. Now, it is Eugene’s turn to make Raffy believe in love again, just as how she reminded him to believe in himself. But is faith enough to change the course of their destiny? And is his love strong enough for him to sacrifice everything for a relationship that will not last, and for a girl who will leave him soon?

Overcoming Fear
“Kaya mo bang mahalin ang isang taong alam mong mawawala rin sa ‘yo?” (Can you love someone you know you’d lose soon?) Forever and a Day poses that challenge to the viewer,” said ABS-CBN International’s Head of Theatricals Kerwin Du. “While this may sound too serious for a summer film here in the U.S., love has always been a universal theme not bound by seasons of the year. We wanted to offer a refreshing summer movie to our kapamilya that is not an action sequel, a 3-D animation or an R-rated comedy. We hope Forever and a Day is an attractive choice to many.”

Forever and a Day will be screened in the following theaters on the following dates:

"The ‘vastly improved’ Sam Milby"

The ‘vastly improved’ Sam Milby
FRIDAY, 01 JULY 2011 00:34

n his latest movie, Forever and a Day, Sam Milby plays Eugene, an alpha male who will finally fall in love, and hard, with a highly desirable woman called Raffy, played by KC Concepcion, who is, unfortunately, saddled with commitment issues.  In short, she’s exactly the kind of woman any competitive, go-get-her alpha male worth his strut was made for.

And nothing seems to be a more apt metaphor for the young woman who struggles to conquer her fears and the young man who pushes himself to the limit than having them play out their tensions amid the ziplines and obstacle trails in the scenic forests of Mindanao.

Which suits Sam Milby just fine. While he says “the story is amazing,” Sam is a natural at playing jocks because he is one.  From age nine till 15, he lived with a coach who taught him competitive ice-skating, joined the school wrestling team and competed in motocross races—all before he flew back to the Philippines and turned his life around by joining Pinoy Big Brother.

In the movie, his character dives off cliffs, walks against the wind on a narrow pole suspended above towering trees, jump from one hanging loop to another, plunge into a cold unpredictable basin of water under a hard driving cascade of a tall waterfall, among other stunts.

Under pressure
There is an unusually heavy pressure on this movie to become a blockbuster in the Philippines and wherever there are OFWs. For one thing, it is an 18th anniversary presentation of Star Cinema. Known for hit romantic movies, Star Cinema has, for another, also tapped their blockbuster ace Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina for this movie.

What’s different here, said Direk Cathy who visibly squirms at being dubbed as a blockbuster movie-maker, is that “it doesn’t just talk about love but also of life.” She said that all of her movies may have seemed like fairy tales, but all of it is based on something that is real. “Whenever I make a scene, hindi sasabihin ng audience na imposible.”

More than the kilig stuff, Direk Cathy says the movie “tells us how to love, to hope and to give love, to impart something of yourself.” She admits that she planted the “seed” of this movie’s premise.

The script, said writer Mae Chua, “allowed me to reflect on my life, to measure the thing that I value most in life. It made me pause and rethink life, how to live it, really.”

Interjects Direk: “Sometimes, all it takes is just a day. A day can be like your forever and forever can also happen in a day.” Ang tanong, will you buy that?

Apparently, her main characters did, after “experiencing” it.

Most improved
Sam has done four movies under Direk Cathy, but she says she only came to love Sam in this movie because it was the first time she saw Sam’s character transform and fall in love.

“I’ve seen him grow,” she says. “I’ve seen how he gave of himself in breathing life to Eugene.” The result, she admits, stunned her, enumerating scenes that she especially loved.

“I just really felt the character, got into the character, and Direk Cathy just allowed me to get into him,” explained Sam when asked where he drew out the emotions he needed for certain scenes.

Direk Cathy says that the growth of Sam’s thespic abilities can be likened to that of John Lloyd Cruz’s, an actor Direk has worked often with and for whom she’s known to have a soft spot.   In reply, Sam said that Direk did prove to him in this movie that although this “forever-in-a-day and whatever-happens-in-a-day-can-affect-you-for-the-rest-of-your-life” thing seemed hard to believe at first, he became a believer after doing the movie.

That gives you an idea of how much Sam Milby became the character he played, which must be why Direk Cathy said she fell in love with Sam here.

Will the audience do the same?  “Whatever happens, we have given it our best, and I think that’s the most important,” Sam hedges.

MANILA, Philippines – Actress KC Concepcion said she is happy because a number of Kapamilyas abroad went out of their way to attend the international premiere of her movie with actor Sam Milby in New York.
Concepcion arrived in Manila Tuesday and told “Showbiz News Ngayon” that she is very grateful for the support “Forever and a Day” is receiving.
“Maraming nagpunta so nakakatuwa kasi marami rin talaga palang Pilipino sa Amerika. Nagpapasalamat kami siyempre sa producer namin...dahil sa kanya, sa tiwala niya sa amin at sa pelikula, nadala namin sa New York ang Forever and a Day,” she said.
Meanwhile, Concepcion clarified why Milby was not with her.
“Si Sam binisita ang daddy niya sa Ohio because nagkasakit ang daddy niya, naospital. I think he said it sa Twitter niya. I think he’s there na with his family and araw araw niyang kausap sa telepono ang mga magulang niya,” she said.
In a separate interview, Milby said since he’s already in US, he decided to visit his family and spend time with them.
“Nakakatakot ngayon. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard of him actually being confined in the hospital. He’s 66 years old and he’s very strong.... I’m going to go home before I go back to the Philippines to spend some time with them,” he said.

KC and Sam: It’s complicated

KC and Sam: It’s complicated

Want to put KC Concepcion on the hot seat? Ask about her rumored breakup with Piolo Pascual, and also how she is getting too close to his buddy and fellow actor Sam Milby.

“Clearly no, and I have said that many times,” she sounded slightly annoyed when asked by The FilAm during the meet-and-greet June 25 at Payag Restaurant in Queens.

KC, the daughter of Pop Megastar Sharon Cuneta, and Sam, contract stars of ABS-CBN were in town for the premiere of their movie, “Forever and a Day.” The film was produced by Star Cinema in collaboration with Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan and Ritzberries Productions.

The actors got more uneasy when the interview got a little too personal: “Do you and Sam see yourselves together in the future?

“In another movie,” Sam, a Filipino American born in Ohio, replied.

“No, romantically,” we pressed on.

“Oh wow, we don’t wanna answer that right now,” said Sam. “First of all, everybody knows that my friend Piolo and KC are together so it’s ugly to answer that question right now.”

Sam admitted that doing the movie with KC was a challenge “because we’re close friends and while on the set we can’t help having a lengthy conversation.” Sam revealed that there were times when Director Cathy Molina would tell them to separate so they could concentrate on their job.

“Our real friendship was like, put on hold in a way,” KC said. “We had to be professional in our roles—we’re so attached to our characters. We pretended we didn’t know each other.” KC said it’s been a difficult three months for them as actors in a film, compared to their three years as friends.

When asked, she chose Sam as her favorite leading man “because we already know each other and we have the same personalities.” She said, “It’s important that you’re comfortable with the person because you see each other every day, morning and night.”

Signing autographs after the screening.
“Since we know each other so well, oftentimes our issues get settled right away,” she added.

What makes this movie different from the ones you’ve done in the past?

“There are many things in this movie that we have not done in the past, and because of this movie that we’re able to do them,” said KC. She did not elaborate.

More than 500 people attended the two screenings on Saturday. There were fans who came all the way from Dubai, Ohio, Chicago and San Francisco. Tickets were $30, $60, and VIP, which included a meet-and-greet with the stars. Many didn’t mind the cost.

“It was well worth it,” said Lina Alcantara, a registered nurse who found KC and Sam “so warm, sincere and accommodating to their fans.”

Though the movie’s storyline has a passing similarity to “Love And Other Drugs” or perhaps “A Walk To Remember,” the direction and cinematography were impressive. And KC’s acting is believable and engaging. She was consistent from start to finish avoiding the opportunity to taking advantage to exaggerate her dying role.

Sam, however, has not fully arrived yet in the acting department. But with KC around him, they appeared to have a credible, enjoyable chemistry together.

“Forever and a Day” follows the story of Eugene (Sam) and Raffy (KC) who meet, fall in love and learn how not to give up when their romance faces challenges.

‘Forever and a Day’ Earns P23.27 Million in First 5 Days June 28, 2011 by cd

Star Cinema’s “Forever and a Day” starring Sam Milby and KC Concepcion had an opening weekend gross of P23.27 million at the box-office.

The Superhero movie Green Lantern topped Philippine box-office for the opening weekend of June 15 to 19 with a haul of P72 million, according to Box Office Mojo. And from the period of up to June 20 including the extended holiday for Jose Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary, the Ryan Reynolds-starrer accumulated P85.66 million, this one according to Warner Bros. Philippines.

The figure has now become the holder of the year’s biggest opening weekend for a Warner title surpassing “Red Riding Hood” and “Sucker Punch”, and the second-biggest of 2011 industry-wide outgrossing “X-Men: First Class,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Thor”.

Placing second, on the other hand, is local romantic drama “Forever and a Day” with P23.27 million box-office gross in its first 5 days. This is really tough for the Sam Milby-KC Concepcion starrer because their film is vying against 7 Hollywood summer movies and getting the no. 2 spot is already commendable.

Meanwhile, “X-Men: First Class” settled for no. 3 after topping Philippine box-office for 2 weeks in a row. “Super 8″ is at no.4 while “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” starring Jim Carrey debuted at no. 5.

Here’s the Philippine box office tally (Top 10) for the opening weekend of June 15 to 19, 2011 according to Box Office Mojo (premiering movies are highlighted in yellow):
