Philippine cinema is well represented at the 2013 Cannes film festival in France.

The digitally restored version of the 1975 Lino Brocka masterpiece “Maynila Sa Kuko Ng Liwanag (Manila in the Claws of Light)” premiered at the Cannes Classic section of the prestigious festival on May 17, with one of its lead stars Hilda Koronel gracing the event.

“Mabuti nga nagawa nila uli ang film na ’to at maipapakita natin sa mga bagong henerasyon para makita nila ’yung mga nangyayari no’n,” said Koronel in an interview clip aired on “State of the Nation,” Monday.

Working hand in hand for the restoration of the film were the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation.

Adolfo Alix, Jr.’s “Death March,” meanwhile, had its Cannes premiere on May 20. Cast member Sam Milby, who wouldn’t miss the opportunity for the world, graced the event, as did actor-producer Jacky Woo and supervising producer Evelyn Vargas-Knaebel.

“It was a difficult but sweet journey for the film. To God be the glory! Thank you to the passionate team who worked on the film,” Alix said via Instagram.

“Death March” is part of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, as with Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan.”
