The Filipino actor and singer Sam Milby serenaded the crowd at 3rd Ward Memorial Park on Sunday, lifting spirits at the day-long 25th annual Philippine Day Parade and Festival, where the participants were still talking about the boxer Manny Pacquiao’s defeat the night before.
Milby, who flew in from the Philippines, was a big hit.
“He’s so handsome,” said Veronica Arceo, 11, of Hillside — but many in the crowd were still buzzing about Pacquiao’s loss to Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Pacquiao is also a Filipino congressman.
“Everyone was talking about it,” said Marcie Arceo, Veronica’s mother. “It was so fixed.” Two of the three judges gave the match to Bradley.
Rael Paloa of Waldwick, the parade chairman, agreed with Arceo. “We were disappointed,” Paloa said. “He lost on paper, but not on the fight.”
Still, the overall mood on Sunday was upbeat, thanks to Milby’s appearance. “The girls were swarming him,” Paloa said. “The girls really love him.”
The tent were Milby was staying almost collapsed as many people tried to get near him, Paloa said.
Milby proclaimed the 3rd Ward park beautiful, and later said he wanted to tour New York City.
“Sammy brought the crowd,” said Marcie Arceo, a member of the board of directors of Film-AM Pagr-Asa, a club that raises funds for college-age Filipino-Americans. “He was a commoner here [Milby was born in Ohio] who went back to the Philippines and made it really big. It’s nice to see he’s giving back.”...
