THE problem with extra good looks is they are never taken seriously,
unless they show extraordinary performances to obliterate the
handsome/pretty-with-no-talent impression.
In Hollywood, that was always the case with guys like Cary Grant, Robert Redford, and more recently Keanu Reeves, and Brad Pitt.
In this part of the world that doesn’t seem to apply as good looking
actors are favored by the movie press (that also hands out the annual
acting awards) than to the not-so-handsome-yet-talented actors.
In the case of Sam Milby who is essentially a heartthrob, he is not
without talent. His only shortcoming is learning the language used on TV
and films in this country. Yet, he is trying very hard. In his mobile
phone, he has a list of Tagalog words frequently used in soap operas he
stars in.
The Kapuso star, more than being a popular star, wants to be taken as a serious actor.
And he’ll do anything to put him in that category, even saying yes to an independent movie called Death March.
In this Adolf Alix-directed film, which was screened at the Cannes
Film Festival recently, Sam plays an American soldier who was among the
soldiers in the Bataan Death March. As one of the lead characters, Sam
has proved he is capable of pulling through a variety of emotions,
especially in the struggle-against-death scenes.
