A Second Look on Sam Milby

Yes! Sam MIlby is all that. Along the very obvious facets of his luminous career, Sam Milby is also a competent actor. He made us all fall in love with his past romantic movie roles. He made us all fall in line in his past movie hits. But has anyone noticed he also has the acting chops? Yes. The reputable Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (better known as Urian) had just proven that by nominating Sam for best actor in his recent indie movie “Third World Happy”. But what gives? Well, it just goes to show that many of us might have been missing out on noticing how really good an actor Sam MIlby is. Or maybe, his acting skills do deserve a second look after all.

And what could be a more opportune time to do this but to see his upcoming Star Cinema movie “Forever and a Day”? In his role as Eugene, Sam gets under the skin of his character. He becomes Eugene, an arrogant go-getter, always up for the challenge, always hungry to be the best. “I play the role of isang tao na parang I live for myself, lahat ng ginagawa ko para sa sarili ko, ako ang importante, kailangan n’yo ako, I don’t need you, you need me, magaling ako, matalino ako. Ganun, Eugene is the kind of person na bilib na bilib sa sarili n’ya!” Sam shares. The director of “Forever and a Day”, Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina adds “Towards the end of the movie, Eugene also learns to accept the things he cannot control. Kasi di ba tayo sa buhay parang ang daming gusto, gusto mong lahat nagagawa mo according to how you want it and the way you want it. Pero minsan kailangan mo tanggapin na hindi lang ikaw, merong mga ibang bagay na nagco-contribute. Maraming mga bagay na dapat ikuconsider hindi lang sarili mo. It’s a story about humility or sa pagtanggap ng mga bagay na hindi mo kaya. Ganun din sa lovelife, as much as humility is needed, it also takes courage, yung totoong tapang sa pagtanggap ng kung anong hindi mo na kaya.” Direk Cathy furthers, “This is my fourth movie with Sam. He is a kid at heart, malaro, magaan katrabaho. Pero sandal, marunong si Sam. Nakakatuwa s’ya pag papanoorin mo kasi once he gets into the character, s’ya na ‘yun.”Shedding his matinee idol persona, Sam as Eugene is dressed-down, a far cry from his drool-worthy leading man look in his past movies. This time, we will see beyond the killer smile and the melting gaze. We will not see Sam. We will see Eugene.

The movie was partly shot in some of the most scenic locales (Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro) and had Sam and his leading lady, KC Concepcion, go through some very extreme adventure sport or games like the zipline, zorb and white water rafting. Sam excitedly narrates “Yung zipline is all of 840 meters, the longest in Asia, we did it around 30 times. ‘Yung zorb, bola tapos andun ka sa loob nakakabit, talagang waaaah! Ang saya! And the white water rafting was really something!” Well, the role of Eugene really must suit Sam to a T. He does some daredevil stunts on his motocross in real life after all. As Eugene, Sam is challenged both emotionally and physically. But being the competent actor that he is, Sam will definitely give life to Eugene, no more no less.

Heartthrob. Matinee idol. Trusted product endorser. Bankable. Competent actor. Yes. He is all that. So let us all take a second look on Sam Milby.
