Sam Milby: Time Away From Local Showbiz Was Worth It

By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ
Sam holds on to his Hollywood dream (Star Cinema)
MANILA, Philippines – Kapamilya star Sam Milby does not regret trying his luck in Hollywood despite having to pass up on some lucrative opportunities in local showbiz and risking his level of popularity here.
In a recent press conference for an endorsement, the singer-actor acknowledged that in an industry as competitive and dynamic as showbiz, there will always be newcomers. What’s important, he added, is he gives his best and is thankful for the blessings and projects that come his way.
Sam was supposed to play Bea Alonzo’s leading man in the hit Star Cinema film “The Mistress,” but the role eventually went to her perennial onscreen partner, John Lloyd Cruz.
“A lot of people feel na nanghihinayang kasi ang ganda ng movie. But ako, I think the experience that I had in the States, I don’t regret it. I think it was something I needed,” he related.
The Fil-Am actor flew to New York early this year to embark on a series of auditions for a number of major US networks. His more than three-month stay in the Big Apple opened his eyes to the culture and trends in the American entertainment industry. The experience likewise humbled him, since he went through those auditions just like any other actor.
There is no better time to try out in the States than now since, “they’re looking for a lot of diversity in Hollywood,” said Sam.
The Asians, he related, “had their time na eh. ‘Yung mga Chinese… na sumikat, and the Koreans right now, sobrang lakas eh. So I’m, hoping in some way— there’s a lot of half-Filipinos na sikat na dun sa States—I’ll be one to carry the Filipino flag.”
Although he’s yet to fully reap the fruits of his Hollywood efforts, Sam is grateful that even after seven years in showbiz, projects continue to come. The former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate was cast in a soap opera opposite young superstar Judy Ann Santos (“Against All Odds”), as well as a Star Magic movie, and an indie under the direction of Adolf Alix, Jr. (“Death March”).

Sam Milby: Judy Ann is 'patient' with me

MANILA, Philippines -- Sam Milby is admittedly feeling the pressure of being the on-screen partner of an actress dubbed as a "young superstar."

For his latest television outing titled "Against All Odds," Milby is paired with actress Judy Ann Santos for the first time. Coming into the initial filming for the project, Milby said he felt shy being around Santos.
"I would say nung mga first taping days namin, hindi sa hindi ako kumportable, parang nahihiya ako sa kanya kasi siyempre sobrang magaling niya, sa teaser pa lang on cue talaga 'yung pag-iyak niya and everything. It’s so good," Milby was quoted as saying by Push.com.ph.
It did not take long, however, before he became at ease working with Santos, who is already considered a veteran in the local showbiz industry.
Having started acting at age 8, Santos is now dubbed a "young superstar" for her longevity and continued success as an actress.
"But I was surprised with how extremely nice she is sa lahat. It’s a lot of fun. She’s just so easy to work with. She has a lot of patience with me. Minsan kahit nabubulol ako, she’s patient with me," said Milby, who even shared a photo of him and Santos on Twitter.
Born in Ohio in the United States, Milby's early years in showbiz saw him mostly limited to speaking in English, his first language, despite being cast in a lead role.
For her part, Santos has only good words for the ex-"PBB" housemate. In a separate interview in early August, the actress said:
"With Sam naman kasi, pwede siyang maging bida, pwede siyang maging kontrabida. Oras naman na para kay Sam para gumraduate sa mga cute films, kasi mature na siya eh. At may arte siyang talaga, may arte siyang taglay, kailangan lang i-push nang husto, and he really listens."
Aside from Milby, who describes working with Santos as a "highlight" of his career, "Against All Odds" also stars KC Concepcion, Tirso Cruz III, Coney Reyes and John Estrada.
"Against All Odds" is expected for a primetime telecast later this year.

Hollywood or bust? (Sam says he'll still go for it)
By Nathalie Tomada (The Philippine Star) Updated September 27, 2012

Sam Milby, the new endorser of Diana Stalder skincare center by Dermaline, Inc., plans to return to the US early next year in time for the casting season

When Sam Milby decided to take a three-month break from local showbiz early this year to try and test the Hollywood waters, he received discouragement with quarters saying that he might not have a career here to return to. Sam, who came back in May, is also aware of talk that nothing came out of it.

Sam, nevertheless, remains undaunted, saying he plans on returning to the States in February next year just in time for the casting period for pilot/returning seasons, which starts January and ends April.

“Yes (I was discouraged) because we all know how people can forget you easily, especially with all the newcomers,” the Kapamilya actor said in following his launch as the face of the Diana Stalder skincare center by Dermaline, Inc. last Tuesday. (He’s also been the face of the company’s Dermablend products for six years now.)

He said that he didn’t want to have any what-ifs. “Ayoko ng mga what-ifs. For me, it was a risk for me to leave, and it’s going to be a risk for me to leave again. But if you don’t take risks, you’re not going to get anywhere in life. You got to believe in like you take a risk, three months, then I’m back here, I still have work, I’m still working and I’ve learned a lot there.”

Asked on the most important lessons he learned from those three months, Sam said, “Sobrang na-appreciate ko yung audition process nila doon kasi dito, you know, if you’re already known, di ka naman nag-a-audition. Ako, we’re very blessed bilang actors in the business. There’s a lot of artists, even in the Philippines, na magaling umarte, and they’re never given the chance to show their craft or their acting, so I really appreciate that lahat ng tao nabibigyan ng pagkakataon dun sa States.”..

He further admitted that his experience in the US both humbled him and bolstered his confidence. “When I got back, I felt different. For the longest time, I admit that I was never self-confident, but when I was in the States, I felt wow, you know what, if I work hard enough, I really feel, I can do these roles, I can do acting, even singing…When I was in the States, mas driven ako.”

Did he feel that things here in the Philippines were rather spoon-fed? “I mean yeah, ako paglabas ng Pinoy Big Brother house, di ba projects kaagad? I admit I was spoon-fed, everything happened so fast…”

Like he was spoiled? “I was. But I look at it more as blessed. Parang everything happens for a reason. Ako, sobrang suwerte ako, sobrang blessed that I never had to go through any hardships, when it came to auditioning or anything, except for PBB.”

Sam said he got motivated to give the Hollywood scene a try because some people in the States thought that he should.

In an ABS-CBN news report published last February, it said that Sam got the attention of a New York ABC Network TV executive who happened to be watching his Heartthrobs concert last year. The TV exec then invited Sam to a meeting then screen tests.

Sam related, “I never had any plans before. But isang TV station doon, nagustuhan nila ako doon, and they got me an agency, Gersh, one of the top agencies in Hollywood.”

(According to Wikipedia.com, the Gersh Agency [TGA] is a talent and literary agency established in 1949 by Phil Gersh, with 125 employees, 60 agents and offices in Beverly Hills and New York.)

“So, parang for me, I think any actor, ultimately, wants to make it internationally and (to be with) one of the best agencies to begin with, is a big thing. Sayang ang opportunity. (But) it’s gonna take time. I was just there for three months. I know a lot of people are thinking, ay wala namang nangyari, you can’t expect (things) to happen that fast.”

While he was in the States, Sam became close to Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, the Fil-Am star of Disney’s TV musicals plus the Broadway show Godspell, and her family. In fact, they helped him settle down in New York when he was based there.

Sam said he is not exactly setting a certain time frame for his Hollywood goals, but he hopes something will happen to him within five years. “And it’s within five years kasi, it’s about building relationships with casting directors and producers, getting used to their process there… Napakahirap talaga dun sa States. Everyone knows that. The competition is really hard.”

No regrets about passing up ‘The Mistress’
Thursday, 27 September 2012

SAM MILBY

Imagine Sam Milby saying the line “I live to disappoint you, Father, it’s my greatest joy” to Ronaldo Valdez. Mahal kita. ‘Yun lang ‘yun.” Well the actor was really supposed to be the one delivering those lines.

Sam admitted last Tuesday that he was originally the choice to play the role of John Lloyd Cruz in the currently-showing “The Mistress” from Star Cinema. He was Eric “JD” Torres until he decided to go abroad for a serious of auditions to try his luck in the United States.

“The Mistress” was but one of the projects that he had to pass up. But he had no regrets, he said in earnest.

Sam, after watching the movie, was all praises for everyone, most especially John Lloyd.

“For me, best performance ni Lloydie,” he enthuses.

He says he does not think he can do better than Lloydie in his portrayal of a man in love with the mistress of his dad. “I really look up to Lloydie. Pareho silang sobrang magaling (ni Bea), pero si Lloydie – wow. maraming scenes na nag shine si Lloydie. Amazing performance.”

Could he have done better?

“No watching all those scenes, ang masasabi ko galing talaga nito (Lloydie),” said Sam. “I don’t feel I can do better than Lloydie.”

Still Sam does not like to entertain the what-ifs. He would rather focus on the now. He has a soap on ABS-CBN, “Against All Odds,” with Judy Ann Santos and KC Concepcion. He also is part of the Star Magic movie marking its 20th anniversary. He will be paired with Pokwang in the vignette directed by Frasco Mortiz. He has also just renewed his contract with Dermablend, signaling his 6th year with the skin care company.

Dina Dela Paz-Stalder of Dermablend claims that Sam has been a big part of the brand’s growth. He has made Dermablend Papaya-Orange one of the highest-selling soaps of its kind in the market.

Sam, meanwhile, admits that he has tried other soap, but only one worked for him. And his good looks attest to his loyalty to the Dermablend papaya-orange blend. It is his one skin secret.

Sam Milby Says Two Major Tv Stations In The U.S. Are Interested To Get Him
Filed under Pinoy Showbiz , by Admin on Sep 26, 2012

SAM MILBY says it’s really sad that some folks dragged his name in the Maja-Matteo breakup. “It’s good Maja clarified that there’s no third party involved in their split up,” he says at his launch as endorser of Diana Stalder Face Body Skin Care Center. “You know how it is in showbiz, some people make a lot of assumptions. Some are even saying I’m now courting Maja. Right now, I’m very much single. I’m so busy, no time for relationships.”

What’s he doing now? “I’m taping ‘Against All Odds’, the new teleserye with Judy Ann Santos and KC Concepcion. I play a very different kind of role here. Dati, lagi akong good boy or romantic lead, but here, I play a grey character. I’m also doing ‘Crazy Love’, the Star Magic 20th anniversary movie where I’m paired with Pokwang. Comedy yung episode namin. I’m also doing the World War II movie, ‘Death March’, with Zanjoe Marudo, Jason Abalos and Sid Lucero.”...

Sam Milby talks about rumored secret relationship with Maja Salvador
9/26/2012 8:25 AM
by: Rhea Manila Santos

With rumors persistently linking him to being the real reason behind the Maja Salvador-Matteo Guidicelli breakup, Sam Milby clarified to members of the press what the real situation is between him and his former co-star in the 2010 series Precious Hearts Romance Presents: Impostor. “We’re okay. Even if we’re just friends but we’re seen together, iniisip na kagad may something. You have to accept that that’s how it is here, but they should understand that you can be friends with somebody and just be hanging out lang. Kami ni Maja we’re friends. Basta we’re friends. You know, we’re together, we’ve been friends for a while and it’s sad kasi with the breakup, you always get pulled into issues and it’s also sad kasi sila they have their own life,” he said during his launch as the endorser of the Diana Stalder Face, Body, and Skin Care Center by Dermaline, Inc. held last September 25 at Mario’s restaurant in Quezon City.

During the press conference, Sam also voiced his opinion that people should be more open-minded about Maja dating anybody right now. “They’re free to date anybody. Hindi naman kailangan na kung sino dini-date, yun na ang third party, hindi dapat ganun. They’re free to date anybody. Hindi kami nag-de-date, we’re friends. You know any guy would have paghanga sa kanya. She’s nice, she’s a very good person but we’re just friends right now. Basta we’re friends right now. It’s not saying that nothing can happen in the future. There have been girls like sa New York, may nagustuhan ako girl doon kaya lang may boyfriend. May girls na may hanga ako but in terms of being single, I’m still single,” he shared.

The 28-year-old actor admitted he is thankful his friendship with Maja was not at all affected by the rumors. “Hindi naman kasi klinaro din niya na wala namang third party and I hope people understand na. I don’t feel bad. This is something that I have to accept in the business. Like I said, if your friends with anybody, if you hang out with anybody, you’re automatically labeled and they make their own assumptions. Basta ang importante, alam ko wala akong ginawang masama. Alam ko kung ano ang totoo at kung ano ang tama. Sadly, people will have their own opinions. Lalabas na lang yung totoo,” he said.

Sam said he enjoys Maja’s company on-and-off cam after they were paired up in Impostor. “She’s very easy to work with. Ang Impostor naman hindi sobrang heavy drama so it was very light, sobrang masaya lang. We got very, very comfortable sa isa’t isa and super fun. Magaan sa trabaho, never naging problema, sobrang bait sa lahat, ganun siya. Everyone knows her like that eh. Off-cam naman ganun din. She’s very professional sa acting. Ganun din siya sa personal, she’s very, very nice, very kind. Hindi siya maarte,” he shared.

"Sam Milby does not regret leaving local showbiz to try his luck in New York"

By Nerisa Almo
Wednesday, September 26, 2012

“I think the experience that I had in the States, I don’t regret it. It’s something that I needed and I’m still pursuing that,” says Sam Milby about the three-month break from Philippine showbiz that he took earlier this year to try his luck in New York.
Photo: Bam Abellon

“But ako, I think the experience that I had in the States, I don’t regret it,” sabi ni Sam sa PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) at iba pang media na naimbitahan sa press conference ng Dermablend kahapon, Setyembre 25.

Paliwanag pa ng Star Magic talent tungkol sa kanyang pag-alis noon, “It’s something that I needed and I’m still pursuing that.

"Hindi naman nag-give up na ako, three months lang ako doon, e.

“That was my initial plan anyway, pabalik-balik ako doon.

“But no [regrets]. It was an amazing experience, I learned a lot. I’m pursuing it pa rin.”

Para sa Kapamilya singer-actor, “Kahit kailan, you have to accept that there will be a time, lalo na ngayon, maraming bago.

“Ako, seven years na sa November that I’ve been in the business. I think it’s a big accomplishment already.

“You have to accept the fact na there’s always gonna be someone new, someone different.

“Just enjoy what you have, do your best sa lahat ng mga project na ginagawa mo.”

ABS-CBN STILL SUPPORTS SAM.

Aniya, “I can’t. Ayaw ko namang mawala yung everything here that’s why pabalik-balik naman.”

“I’ve come back and ABS-CBN is still giving me Against All Odds, a new movie din.

“So, you’ll see talaga na seven years na ako sa business but they’re still giving me projects.”

"Sam Milby opens up about Maja"

By Reyma Buan-Deveza, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 09/25/2012

Milby reveals he was first choice for 'The Mistress'

MANILA, Philippines - Actor Sam Milby denied that he is now courting Maja Salvador, who recently broke up with actor Matteo Guidicelli. But the former "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate refused to reject the possibility of a future relationship.

"Basta Maja and I are friends, basta we are friends right now. But I can't say na nothing will gonna happen in the future," Milby told reporters in a press launch of his endorsement, Dermablend, on Tuesday afternoon.

Milby, who stressed that he is single, said that he and the actress have remained okay even after his name cropped up after Salvador broke up with Guidicelli.

"We are OK. Basta we are friends. We worked together and we'd been friends for a while. And it's sad kasi with the breakup, you always get included in the issue. Dapat alam din ng mga tao na kasi nag-break na 'yung mga tao, they have their own lives now, they are free to date anybody. Hindi naman kailangan na kung sino ang dini-date, 'yun ang third party. Hindi dapat ganoon. They are free to date anyone," Milby said.

The actor said his relationship with Salvador wasn't affected by the rumors, especially since Salvador made it clear that he was not the third wheel that led to the separation.

"Kinlaro din niya na wala namang third party and I hope people will understand," he said.

This is not the first time Milby has dragged in a high-profile breakup. It will be recalled that Milby was also reported as the alleged third party in the breakup of KC Concepcion and Piolo Pascual.

"I don't feel bad. It's something that you have to accept naman here in the business. ...They make assumptions. Basta ang importante ay alam kong wala akong ginagawa, at alam ko ang tama. Sadly people have their opinions at lalabas naman ang totoo," he said.

His loss, John Lloyd's gain

Milby, who flew to the United States early this year in the hopes of making it in Hollywood, admitted that his absence in the local entertainment scene has hurt his popularity.

"Siyempre matagal na akong nawala sa primetime at nag-one movie lang ako last year. The thing is you have to accept na there will be a time ...lalo na ngayon at maraming bago. Ako seven years na this November na I'd been in the business. I think that's an accomplishment already. But you have to accept the fact na there's going to be someone else, someone new, someone different. You just have enjoy what you have," Milby told ABS-CBNnews.com.

But Milby said he has no regrets about pursuing his Hollywood dream -- even if it cost him a role in a major blockbuster hit.

Milby revealed that the role of JD in Star Cinema's "The Mistress," which was eventually given to John Lloyd Cruz, was originally offered to him.

"Actually 'The Mistress,' yun ang role ko and lahat ng people ay nanghihinayang kasi ang ganda ng movie. That was offered to me first. But ako, no (regrets). I think the experience that I had in the States was something I needed. And I'm still pursuing it. Hindi naman sa nag-give up na ako eh three months lang ako doon. That was my initial plan anyway, three months tapos pabalik-balik na ako doon. It was an amazing experience and I'm still pursuing it pa din," he said.

"Sila doon (sa U.S.) they are saying it's best if I stay there. Ako ayaw kong mawala 'yung what I have here. So balik-balik na lang. Ako I'm just excited na I went away for three months then I come back, then ABS-CBN is still giving me 'Against All Odds' and a new movie din. Seven years na ako sa business but they are still giving me projects,"
he said.

Currently, Milby is doing an independent film "Death March" for director Adolfo Alix.
