Top Pinoy celebrities on Twitter

by Harold Geronimo
Yes, I’m a self-confessed Twitter addict - @harold_geronimo. It’s like going back to television work where I spent seven years as a broadcast journalist. You have your own audience (a.k.a. followers) who eagerly wait for news and information coming their way real-time. You have people who may not like what you share, and some of them turn to be haters, or worse, posers. You will have your own loyal fans who are always excited to receive tweets even just a simple “Hello.” This is the Twitter World. For some, it’s the Twitterverse, short for Twitter Universe. Here in the Philippines, it is home to many celebrities who want to virtually socialize – whether with fans or with fellow celebrities.

1. Anne Curtis (@annecurtissmith)
With over 1.2 million followers to date, Anne Curtis is definitely the country’s Twitter queen. She holds the title for being the only Filipino (not to count Bruno Mars) based in the Philippines who first reached the 1-million mark in terms of followers. The TV host-actress who is also one of the most in-demand celebrity endorsers today makes it a point to greet her followers every morning with her signature “It’s Showtime!” scream. She also updates everyone with her day-to-day schedules such as tapings and even night-out with friends. Whatever she says, her tweets surely echo throughout the Twitterverse.

2. Angel Locsin (@143redangel)
As one of the sexiest Filipino celebrities of our generation, Angel Locsin could have probably captured the senses of many fans to get in touch with her through Twitter. At present, she runs second with more than 750,000 followers. Angel regularly updates her followers with her shoot and show schedules. She also uses Twitter to communicate with other fellow celebrities. What’s great about Angel on Twitter is her sincerity in expressing herself – no acting, nothing superficial.

3. Kris Aquino (@itsmekrisaquino)
Without any doubt, Kris Aquino makes it in the Top 3 cut because of her interesting and sometimes shocking announcements and revelations on Twitter. With over 700,000 followers, Kris remains to be the country’s “Queen of Talk” because whatever she says, people would usually make a big fuss out of it. Although she doesn’t update her Twitter too often, many fans always look forward to her tweets especially about “Pilipinas Got Talent”, and of course, her family life. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kris will become the next Filipino to reach the one millionth followers mark within a few months

4. Sam Milby (@samuelmilby)
Sam Milby is the only male celebrity who made it to the list. He has built a strong following from many fans (and a lot of TFC fans across the globe) since he started tweeting two years ago. Today, he has around 628,000 followers and still growing. He doesn’t tweet a lot, but when he does, his followers quickly react. The hunky actor/singer mostly talks about his personal schedules and even how he feels during the day. So the fans easily get a feel of their celebrity idol’s day and they get to send him messages. And of course, what makes the excitement grow fonder are the personal photos that he posts once in a while.

5. Bianca Gonzales (@iamsuperbianca)

She’s one of the smartest celebrity hosts on Philippine TV today so I’m not surprised that Bianca Gonzales is also fast gaining followers everyday on Twitter. She has successfully promoted her Twitter account to surpass the 500,000 mark in just a few months since she started hosting SNN (Showbiz News Ngayon) daily. As of today, Bianca has around 563,000 followers. She is fond of re-tweeting some of her closest friends’ updates, but most importantly, her fans are always excited to read her messages to fellow celebrities.
