MANILA, Philippines — At Christmas time, Juan de la Cruz digs into his pocket and finds out he has only one hundred pesos left for Christmas Eve. He will spend fifty pesos to buy his daughter a plastic doll and another fifty to buy rice and bread, then walk 15 kilometers going home because he won’t be able to afford to ride a tricycle anymore.

This is the true Filipino spirit-giving till it hurts.

And the Filipinos have proved once again that we are champions in giving even when there seems to be nothing left to give. The last largest record of a Secret Santa (monito-monita or exchange gift) recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records was in London, U.K. (a first-world country) with 1,270 participants. The Philippines (a third-world country) has beaten that record with 4,557 participants organized all over the world by Globe Telecom and OWWA.

I hosted the event here with Gabe Mercado and Chiqui Reyes and my hair stood when 3,500 participants, mostly OFW family members, raised their gifts altogether.

OWWA administrator Carmelita Dimzon told us, “Most of the gifts prepared by the OFW family members ranged from 80-100 pesos, some even less, but the monetary value of the gift does not count but the act of giving and receiving a gift this Christmas does. That is what the season is all about.”

Globe Telecom increased the number of monito-monita participants by organizing world-wide monito-monitas setting up Secret Santa events in Singapore hosted by Pokwang and Jake Cuenca; in Hong Kong hosted by Rico Puno and K Brosas; in Taiwan hosted by Sam Milby and Tuesday Vargas. But the biggest number of participants was at the Rizal Memorial Stadium impressing Guinness representative Jack Brockbank.
