MANILA, Philippines -- Actor Sam Milby is not giving up on his dream of making it in Hollywood, saying he will return again to the United States next year for auditions.

Milby, who's now busy with his upcoming series "Against All Odds," returned to the Philippines after spending several months in the U.S.

"Halos every year babalik ako for four months. So, pagkatapos nitong taping na ito -- it will be most likely January -- ay babalik ako doon. Pabalik-balik lang," Milby said in an interview on Wednesday.

Milby left the country in February to audition for an American TV series.

Milby said even if opportunities did not open during his first try, he would continue pursuing his dream again when pilot TV shows in the U.S. open for the 2013 casting season.

In the interview, Milby, who's been concentrating more on his music lately, admitted he feels pressured to be starring in a primetime series again, especially since it has been nearly two years since he last headlined a series, "Idol," with Sarah Geronimo.

But Milby said he is also lucky to be cast opposite dramatic actress Judy Ann Santos in "Against All Odds."

"'Yung pagbalik ko sa Primetime -- with Ms. Judy Ann, of course, it's her comeback din -- talagang blessed na blessed ako to work with her," he said.

Sam Milby can’t avoid being very emotional last Sunday when he was with his interview on The Buzz and claimed that he was very-touched by her elder sister Ada which he have given a cheer-up. In fact, they were being apart from each other before they’ve met again. When Sam was asked if how special is her sister to him, “The fact that we are so close, I’ve never said this ever since I was little. We’re only 10 months apart. Irish twins kami,” Sam started . “We’re both 28 ngayon, kahit noong bata ako… how much I really look up to her, in everything talaga.” Ganito rin daw siya nagkaroon ng interes sa skating dahil idolo niya ang kanyang kapatid. “I always followed what she did, I looked up to her,” He said.

Sam’s message for her beloved sister, “You don’t understand I how glad I am to have you here. It’s been so long, we haven’t been able to hang out. I don’t want you to go back (to the US). I want you to stay here and thank you for always being the role model and I love you, thank you.”

“Hollywood Dream”, one of Sam’s dream that he is carefully pursuing right now. He honestly added that it is not easy to audition, he said, “Lalo na ‘yung first (time to audition) kasi dito sa Pilipinas kapag may pangalan ka na, hindi ka naman nago-audition, so ‘yung mga first auditions (sa US) nanibago ako.”

Hindi maiwasan ni Sam Milby na maging sentimental sa kanyang interview sa The Buzz dahil masyado siyang na-touch sa papuri sa kanya ng kanyang nakatatandang kapatid na si Ada. Matagal kasing nagkahiwalay ang magkapatid bago sila muling nagkita. Kaya naman tinanong si Sam kung gaano ka-espesyal ang relasyon niya sa kanyang ate.

Samantala, ipinahayag din ni Sam na patuloy ang kanyang pagpupursige para makamit ang kanyang Hollywood dream. Aminado siya na hindi madali ang kanyang pag-o-audition doon. “Lalo na ‘yung first (time to audition) kasi dito sa Pilipinas kapag may pangalan ka na, hindi ka naman nago-audition, so ‘yung mga first auditions (sa US) nanibago ako.” 

Kakagaling lang ni Sam sa US at aniya, marami niyang natutunan sa kanyang auditions sa pagsusumikap na maisakatuparan ang kanyang Hollywood dream. “Lalo kong naa-appreciate ‘yung nangyayari sa buhay ko dito, sa career ko dito,” pahayag ng aktor. Masuwerte raw siya na kahit ‘di na niya kailangang mag-audition sa mga proyekto ay ibinibigay sa kanya ang magagandang proyekto ng ABS-CBN.  “But the (US) experience also, it was a confidence-booster para sa akin, it is Hollywood.” Aniya, maganda raw ang feedback na ibinigay sa kanya sa kanyang ginawang auditions at malaking compliment din daw na ang agent na kumuha sa kanya ay malaking pangalan sa Hollywood.

Noong Miyerkules ay dumating na sa bansa si Sam Milby mula sa Amerika kung saan siya nag-audition para subukan ang career sa Hollywood. “It’s very worth it, it was a great experience. All the auditions and the great feedback, I just feel different from when I left here. I just have more desire to work and I gained more confidence. And I think there’s a misconception of things too, kasi wala akong balak dati na pumunta sa States to try it out there. It came to me, there was a network that liked me and got me an agency there. So I’m thankful sa lahat ng nangyari,” pagbabahagi ni Sam.


Samantala, masayang-masaya rin si Sam dahil nagkaroon siya ng pagkakataong makasama ang kanyang ama habang siya ay nasa Amerika. “Pumunta siya sa New York for four days. Siguro sa buong buhay ko, ‘yun ang pinaka-bonding namin kasi workaholic talaga ang tatay ko. I just realized we had all the time to just enjoy our time together, nag-usap kami. I got to learn more about ‘yung pamilya ko sa side ng tatay ko. He’s not retired, meron pa siyang negosyo. He’s turning seventy eight years old this October,” pagtatapos ng aktor.


Ayon pa kay Sam ay siguradong babalik ulit siya doon sa isang taon para muling mag-audition para sa ilang mga proyekto.

MAGTATAGAL ng bansa si Sam Milby after niyang bumalik mula sa New York City.

Ilang buwan din sa Amerika si Sam dahil sa auditions niya roon para sa Hollywood TV shows.

Sa kanyang pagba*balik-Pilipinas ay gagawa ang binata ng pelikula at teleserye with Judy Ann Santos and Jessy Mendiola sa ABS-CBN.

Ayon sa manager ni Sam na si Erickson Raymundo, malamang na hanggang sa Nobyembre pa sa Pilipinas ang kanyang alaga.

Tungkol sa auditions ni Sam sa Amerika, nilinaw ni Erickson na hindi pa lumalabas ang resulta ng mga ‘yon.

May ilang tagaroon daw ang gusto pa sana na magtagal doon si Sam para mag-audition sa iba pang TV shows, pero noon pa nilinaw ng manager ni Sam na hanggang three months lang ito puwedeng mag-stay sa Amerika dahil sa commitment nila sa Dos.

NEW YORK, NY – It’s been a month since Fil-Am actor and singer Sam Milby moved to New York to chase his American dream. Milby wants to become a star in mainstream US television. He has gone through nine auditions for roles in TV pilots for major networks and is now waiting to hear from casting agents and directors.

“Yes it is stressful. I hear good things and good feedback, but I wonder, am I going to get a call back?” Milby said.

As he anxiously awaits the coveted good news, he is now considering enrolling in acting classes & workshops in New York City to further hone his talent.

Milby has also moved out of his Brooklyn flat and transferred to a smaller but more expensive apartment in SOHO, Manhattan’s shopping district.

But even in this busy neighborhood, Milby stands out in the crowd.

“I can’t believe it, out of nowhere in the whole world in SOHO, we see Sam Milby,” tourist Roxy Medina from Sydney, Australia said.

“We wish Sam Milby the best, I know that he’s been in a lot of Filipino things already, so he’s going to be big in America too. We wish him all the best. He makes us Filipinos proud,” Annie Antonio said.

While Milby has been getting nothing but support from his fans, some critics say making it in Hollywood is easier said than done.

“It seems impossible to break into Hollywood. But even if nothing happens this year, I’m not going to give up,” Milby said.

The actor who became known in the Philippines says, he still believes that something good will come out of his journey.

“I already have the step ahead of being with such a good agency and that in itself is hard to find. So If I have such a good agency that believes in me, it’s just maybe the right project has not come for me yet this season,” Milby said.

NAKAKAISANG buwan na pala si Sam Milby sa New York, at nakawalong auditions naman siya para sa bagong TV shows doon.
Sa huling linggo ng Abril pa malalaman kung may napasahan si Sam.
Masayang ibinalita ng manager ni Sam na si Erickson Raymundo, kararating lang galing New York, na masaya sila sa mga feedback na naririnig nila. Pagkatapos ng audition ay pinababalik ulit ang binatang aktor para sumubok sa iba pang shows.

“Ang style pala roon, kapag interesado sa iyo ang isang caster ay sasabihan kang bumalik. `I think you’re better in drama. So `pag ganu’n na sinabihan ka, it’s a good sign pala kasi gusto nila talaga si Sam, may nagko-call back kasi,“ kuwento ni Erick.
Para sa lead role at second to the lead ang auditions ni Sam at sa drama, sitcom at reality pala siya bagay.

“`Yan ang mga kategoryang magkakasama, hiwalay naman ang action,“ dagdag ng manager ng aktor.

“Malaking advantage talaga na may agency si Sam doon. `Yung agency mismo ang nagpapadala kay Sam sa different roles, for regular role, hindi guesting o extra lang.

“Mahirap kung walang agency kasi wala kang back-up. So happy si Sam sa experience niya roon. Whatever happens, hopeful naman si Sam na may makukuha siya. ‘Pag may nakuha siyang projects, ang usual taping is September kaya uuwi muna siya ng Pilipinas by May at saka siya babalik doon ng September,” kuwento ni Erick.
“Basta babalik at babalik doon si Sam for pilot season whether may makuha siya o wala.”

Baguhan man o beterano, dumaraan sa auditions para sa pilot season ng mga programa sa Amerika.
“Maraming mga datihan na, may mga familiar faces kaming nakita, di ba nga, kapag pilot season lahat nagpupunta roon from different countries at ‘yung iba, isang taon ang inaabot just to use of the audition system.

“Kasi ang audition system pala, from January 15 to first week of May, ganu’n nila kakalkulado talaga, ‘tapos ang daming shows, nasa 40 shows pala ang sa bawat network kaya aabutin sa 300 shows lahat na hindi naman sabay-sabay mag-eere kasi ‘papa-approve pa, kaya magti-taping sila ng pilot at saka ipapakita. Ang kagandahan, maski na hindi pa umeere bayad ka na (unlike dito hindi kababayaran
kung hindi umere). ‘Tapos by September, ‘yun na ‘yung taping ng series,” kuwento pa ng Cornerstone Talent agency owner.
Babalik si Sam ng Pilipinas sa huling linggo ng Mayo at may naghihintay na raw na soap drama at isang pelikula sa Star Cinema.
Timing ang uwi ng aktor dahil sa Mayo ang airing ng nasabing soap na aabot ng Agosto, at in between ay magso-shoot siya ng pelikula. Unang linggo ng Setyembre, balik-Amerika si Sam.

Bago bumalik ni Sam doon, saka pa lang daw siya pipirma ng kontrata sa ABS-CBN. Ang ikinatataka namin, nag-offer ang ABS-CBN management ng projects with corresponding talent fee kay Sam samantalang kay Derek Ramsay ay wala?
Kahit nasa US si Sam ay nakakaraket pa rin siya. Sa isang buwan niya roon ay nakatatlong shows siya kasama si Angeline Quinto, ‘tapos kasama rin ang aktor sa apat na shows na Teleserye Bidas (leading men of ABS-CBN) handog ng TFC at may inquiries din as solo performer para sa mga event.

“So, income wise, bawi rin siya kung anuman ‘yung hindi niya kinikita sa Pilipinas,” say ni Erick.

MANILA, Philippines — The list of Filipino celebrities who try their luck in Hollywood grows longer and longer. Some have succeeded, more have failed.

On account of their birth rights, Filipino-Americans however have greater chances at the Hollywood dream. There’s comedian Rob Schneider and drama/action star Lou Diamond Phillips. Then there is the younger batch of Fil-Ams including Vanessa Hudgens, lead actress of the then popular TV movie series, High School Musical, and Ana Maria Perez de Tagle, who came out in Camp Rock.

Their success has inspired singer/actor Sam Milby to temporarily hang up his local showbiz mantle and hie off to the United States to do auditions for various television shows. Born and raised in Troy, Ohio, Sam entered showbiz through the backdoor, via the reality show Pinoy Big Brother in 2005.

“Kinda scary but very excited. It’s a new chapter in my life. I’ll be there over three months and do auditions. It’s pilot week season so there are a lot of new shows from the network,” shares the 27 year-old actor.

Sam is hoping that he has gathered enough materials for his acting portfolio to be let in the door. Among his more notable works are as as JB Roxas Berenguer in the television series “Maging Sino Ka Man” and his drama-romance-comedy films such as “My Big Love”, “Babe, I Love You” “and “Forever and a Day.”

LEAVING HOME

Last month, while Sam was busy packing his bags and tying loose ends, the Students and Campuses Bulletin team was allowed to peek into his inner sanctum in a Pasig City house he invested in and built. Sam is entrusting the upkeep of the house to some relatives while he is away.

The three-bedroom home, which he intended to be modern and Japanese inspired, is spacious and even has a theater on the second floor. A wooden faux wall where a flat TV is installed is built between the dining and the living area and it swivels 180 degrees so that TV screen may be seen from either the two rooms.

“I was really hands-on building this house, I wanted to have a staircase with no hand railings. I wanted to have this swiveling part with the TV,” he explains.

His favorite part of the room, beside his bedroom, is understandably the home theater.

“I stay in the theater room a lot. I love watching movies, I have a collection of original BluRay discs. I watch everything. My favorites are Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, it’s a great movie, I was surprised it didn’t do well in the box office, it’s such a good movie. Some of my all-time favorites are Braveheart, Interview with the Vamipre, Fight Club,” he says.

Yet, Sam doesn’t like watching his own film. “I hate watching myself. ‘Yun talaga ang isang bagay na ayaw ko talaga, ‘yung panoorin ang sarili ko. The premiere night is the first and last time I watch my movies.”

He also has his own fully-equipped gym with a sauna and of course a pool. But he admits that he hasn’t used the gym in a while. Last year, he only used the gym for less than 10 times!

Sam describes himself as a “health conscious freak”. He only drinks soy milk, eats wheat bread, and will not touch fried foods with a ten-foot pole. This is how he stays lean, he says, and only needs minimal work out.

HIS DREAM HOME

One of his favorite places in the house is his loft-type bedroom. His bedroom on the second floor has two floors. His bed and a balcony are located on the second floor of the room while his living/entertainment area, walk-in closet, and bathroom are on the first floor.

On a lazy day, Sam says he loves sleeping in because he is basically a night owl. “I’m a night owl and I want to change that. There are times when I don’t have work in the morning I tend to sleep at 4 a.m. and I hate that. The book that I am reading, “A man who wakes up before dawn, 360 days a year will never let his family hungry.” I need to start disciplining myself to go to bed early and wake up early. I hate the feeling like I wasted a day. There’s always something I need to get done. When I wake up late, it’s already a wasted day,” Sam explains. He is also a gamer, owning multiple game consoles and mobile gadgets. This is another thing he wants to change so he can read more books.

Yet, this is still not Sam’s dream home. He envisions that dream house to have – don’t look now – a motocross track!

“I really want a motocross track. I love the outdoors and I want a spacious house and lot. Kahit maliit ‘yung bahay basta may motocross track, dream house ko na ‘yun,” he says.

He arrived in New York on a Wednesday. By Thursday, he was done with two auditions. That Saturday, he was on yet another ‘Welcome to New York’ dinner tendered by his friends. Such is the life of Sam Milby.

The singer-actor left the Philippines temporarily to settle in New York and see what opportunities are in store for him in the land of his birth. Born in Ohio, Sam was on a vacation in the Philippines when showbiz there beckoned.

He started with print and some TV commercials. Then his big break happened: Pinoy Big Brother on ABS-CBN. He wasn’t in the original cast, but as his luck would have it, someone had to leave the show and the producers were looking for a replacement. He was one of the last people to the audition. Lady luck smiled at this 20-year-old balikbayan from America.

Then came the eviction. It was between him and fellow cast member Jayson Gainza. The housemate who would be evicted was decided through text votes from fans all over the Philippines. When Sam heard his name called, cutting his short-lived stint in the Big Brother house, he shrugged and thought it was all over. He felt nobody liked him and nobody voted for him, that was why he was evicted.

Little did he know that quite the opposite happened.

“I really thought back then that the fans hated me, that they didn’t want to see me in the show. I couldn’t reconcile what I was feeling that moment with what I was seeing when I went out of the Big Brother house and there were lots of people screaming my name,” Sam recalled during the welcome dinner tendered by his friends.

The rest, as the cliché goes, is history, Sam’s history. His meteoric rise to fame brought him lead roles in teleseryes, movies, endorsements, concerts and a recording career to boot. He was everywhere.

Somewhere along the way, Sam began entertaining thoughts of making it in Hollywood.

This year, armed with a renewed sense of self-confidence, Sam packed his bags and moved to the Big Apple. He is currently being represented by The Gersh Agency, one of the top agencies in the entertainment industry today.

“I am definitely liking it here. I’m quite excited to see all the auditions I’ll be doing. I am looking forward to the challenges that I’d be facing here. In the Philippines, I only had one audition, PBB. It’s like I am starting all over. It’s going to be a fun journey for me,” he said, looking forward to the next three to four months of his life.

This is the period in the entertainment industry called the “pilot season”. This is when producers cast their new shows, after which they will shoot a pilot episode which will be given to networks. The networks then pick up a show and orders a few episodes, which will then premiere in the fall. If viewers love the show, then the network can order a full season from the producers. If not, then it gets cancelled.

Even with numerous films and teleseryes tucked under his belt, Sam somehow yearned for more.

“It is every actor’s dream is to make it big in Hollywood. At first, I didn’t entertain the thought because I knew it was hard, it was like finding a needle in the haystack. Then the opportunity presented itself,” he shared.

The opportunity that Sam is talking about happened during the New York leg of the Star Magic tour in 2010. Ritz Brinas, the concert producer and her husband Mario had friends who were network executives who watched the show at Lincoln Center, and were impressed by Sam. Again, as luck would have it, they were looking for Asian actors who spoke English fluently. Sam was eventually invited for a meeting, a couple of interviews and audition.

“We are happy and proud to help Sam. The opportunity to bring Filipino talent to the world’s stage is something you cannot just disregard,” Ms. Brinas said. “Sam is ready to tackle Hollywood because of his passion to succeed. It is his natural progression from his growth in the Philippines.”

The timing was perfect, although Sam had to say no to some projects that his mother network had lined up for him.

In between the hefty meal and the sumptuous desserts, Sam opened his heart and shared his thoughts on this recent move, including his fears.

“Like most people, I do have fears. I gave up a soap and a movie for the opportunity to be here. It has been a long time since I had a teleserye and I was looking forward to doing my next one but then, I chose to be here,” he said.

Sam was supposed to be a part of the teleserye Alta, starring Gretchen Barretto, KC Concepcion and Luis Manzano and in a still-untitled Star Cinema film with Bea Alonzo.

With his feet firmly planted on the ground and slowly but surely believing in himself more, Sam has found ways to allay these fears.

For that, he has his family and friends to thank.

Friends from Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles flew in for the welcome dinner prepared specially for him. Most of them began as supporters who followed Sam in his concert tours here in the US years ago. They have formed a solid bond among each other that they already consider each other as family.

“Sam is one of the nicest actors in Philippine entertainment. He is kind, generous and humble. At times you forget he is a big movie star from the Philippines but he does not act like that at all. He works very hard and is eager to learn,” Ritz explained. “Being here in New York is quite exciting and different for Sam but like he said in his other interviews, if he doesn’t nail a tv series this season, he is still thankful for the opportunity. And if he does, no one deserves it more than Sam Milby.”

“I am very thankful. Grabe talaga yung support nila. I totally feel the love. They definitely made this transition easier,” Sam said.

For now, it is all about the auditions. According to Ritz, he’s had 8 auditions to date with CW, ABC and HBO, majority are for lead roles. “Feedbacks are positive so hopefully he’ll get a follow-up. But there are a lot more auditions in the next few weeks,” she quipped.

Sam thinks he has figured this new chapter in his life. Whatever happens, he believes, will make him stronger than he is now.

“Even if I don’t get a project in the three and a half months that I will be staying here, I know I will be a better person because of this experience. I also know that I will come back to try again, kung walang mangyari this year,” he said.

Such is the drive of this young man who practically became an overnight sensation in his mother’s homeland. Everything was handed to him on a silver platter.

“Before PBB, I wasn’t an actor, I wasn’t a singer. Then it all happened so fast. I never really believed in myself before. I know it’s hard to believe but that’s the truth,” he said, smiling at the fact that we were in almost disbelief.

Indeed, it is hard to imagine someone like Sam Milby having bouts with his own insecurities. Maybe he should give himself more credit because as an actor, he appears bursting with the right amount of self-confidence every time.

It could be that the years he spent in Philippine showbusiness taught him lessons on believing in himself more than anything else, something that wasn’t taught even in the finest schools.

“The first couple of years are totally a blur, complete blur. They made me so busy that I was averaging an hour of sleep a night. I barely slept at all. I was on auto-pilot, almost on a zombie-mode. It was too much at that time. I can’t complain though because I got a lot of blessings there,” Sam shared.

Asked what advice he would give his younger self knowing what he knows now, Sam quipped, “Learn Tagalog, and believe in yourself more.”

So I asked him back, ‘When did you start to believe in yourself more?’ and with a smile, Sam responded, ‘When that happens, I will let you know.’

That is the Sam Milby in a nutshell: audacious and a bit daring, with just enough bravado and chutzpah to make it big in this industry.

"SAM MILBY IN A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND"

NEW YORK- Filipino-American singer and actor Sam Milby is in a New York state of mind.

Like many ambitious young people chasing their dream in the Big Apple, Milby was lured to the city of great challenges and opportunities.

The challenge: To land a lead role in a show that could be a hit series on National TV.

The opportunity: Sam’s agent has already booked him to do several casting auditions including one for Warner Brothers.

Sam Milby said, “I still get nervous. I can see myself doing this. It’s a little out of my character, but the people at the network think it’s right for me.”

Like many New Yorkers, a pit stop at a local Starbucks is a must to start his day right.

But Filipinos know that Milby is not an ordinary New Yorker.
A family from Teaneck, New Jersey immediately recognized the Filipino star.

Sylvia Figeroa said, “My God, he’s so handsome, good luck, God bless you Sam on your auditions, hope you get it.”

After studying the script for his audition, Sam walks to the Warner Brothers office in Manhattan for his afternoon appointment.

Standing in front of the Warner Brothers lobby, Sam said, “For me, I find this to be a very important audition, it’s a big audition. Let’s hope it goes well, I guess I’ll see you guys later and let you know how it went, alright. Bye, wish me luck.”

Unlike other actors auditioning for the part, Sam has already proven himself to millions of viewers from the Philippines.

“The Philippines has a lot of great talent, it’s like sometimes you just hope that other people from other places around the world can see how skilled they are and how they can compete with talent in New York, for instance.” Filipino Foreign Student at NYU, Katrina Yap said, “It’s really nice to see someone’s journey from the Philippines to being like a world-wide actor, we’re so proud of him.”

After an hour or so, Sam came out of his audition with a smile on his face and two thumbs up.

“I think it went well, I feel good about it and she seems happy, so I’m excited,” Sam said, “Hopefully, I get a call soon.”

After the big audition, Sam heads back to his Brooklyn apartment, study his next script and get ready for another round of auditions.
Just another day in the life of an actor—wanting to make it in New York.
