Nine films are vying for the Best Picture award in the 34th Gawad Urian. This year's nominees depict a wide range of stories that date back to the Filipino-American War during the 1900s and tackle the modern-day period as well.
The films competing for the honor of being called the Best Picture of 2010 include Amigo (starring Joel Torre), Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria (starring Donna Gimeno), Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Yelo (starring Elijah Castillo and Edwin Pamanian), Chassis (starring Jodi Sta. Maria), Halaw (starring John Arcilla and Maria Isabel Lopez), Limbunan (starring Joem Bascon and Tetchie Agbayani), Noy (starring Coco Martin), Sheika (starring Fe GingGing Hyde) and Tsardyer (starring Dimples Romana and Mon Confiado).
The members of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) primarily chose independently produced films to compete in this year's edition. Most of the entries previously competed in film festivals in the country, namely Cinemalaya and Cinema One.
The MPP is composed of Dr. Roland Tolentino, Dr. Gigi Alfonso, Mario Hernando, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, Dr. Miguel Rapatan, Benilda Santos, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, Tito Valiente, Lito Zulueta and Butch Francisco.
The awards night of the 34th Gawad Urian is scheduled to take place on May 17, 2011. It is presented by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Cinema One.

As reported on "Showbiz News Ngayon," March 21, Gretchen Barretto, Angelica Panganiban, and KC Concepcion are starring for the first time together in a TV project aptly titled "Alta."
The series had as working title "Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa" until it became "Alta Sosyedad," only to be shortened to "Alta."
The three actresses will co-star with Sam Milby and Zanjoe Marudo in the series set to air in June.

Actor-comedian-host John Estrada and beauty queen Priscilla Meirelles tied the knot on February 26 at the Thunderbird Poro Point Resort in San Fernando, La Union.
The ceremony was set in the resort's garden, which was decked out with green and violet ornaments. The view of the sea and sunset added drama to the touching and romantic ceremony that moved the couple and some of their guests to tears.
The couple's guests included Regine Velasquez with husband Ogie Alcasid, Kris Aquino, Sam Milby, Ai-Ai delas Alas, John's best man and best friend Richard Gutierrez with wife Lucy Torres-Gomez and daughter Juliana, Lorna Tolentino, Vicki Belo, Hayden Kho Jr., Ginger Conejero, and more.
The reception also took place at the resort. According to PEP.ph, the theme was local and international places. Flags of different "countries were placed around the venue" and each table was marked with names of different locations.
It was John's second wedding. He was once married to actress Janice de Belen and it was in 2006 that John and Priscilla started dating according to PEP.ph

MANILA, Philippines - Actress Gretchen Barretto is gearing up for a major television comeback.
La Greta told “Showbiz News Ngayon” that she is set to do a new television series, titled "Alta," with young actresses KC Concepcion and Angelica Panganiban.
"Alta" is Barretto's next soap after doing fashion-serye show "Magkaribal."
"Magte-tape kami right after Holy Week. So, ang tantiya namin ilalabas the same time ‘yong [tulad] last year na nilabas namin ‘yong 'Magkaribal.' So, about June lalabas na ang 'Alta,' ang title namin sa aming bagong teleserye," Barretto said.
"Alta" will be directed by Noel Naval.
Reports said hunk actors Sam Milby and Zanjoe Marudo will also be part of the TV series.

After his breakup with Anne Curtis, naugnay ang pangalan ni Sam Milby sa Japanese-American acoustic singer na si Marie Digby.
"Sam is very special to me because he doesn't even realize how special he is. I think he's very modest. He doesn't realize that he's got that 'it' factor and he's charming. He walks into a room and people would go crazy and he doesn't even realize that. That's what makes him special," says Marie Digby about Sam Milby.

"Sam is very special to me because he doesn't even realize how special he is. I think he's very modest. He doesn't realize that he's got that 'it' factor and he's charming. He walks into a room and people would go crazy and he doesn't even realize that. That's what makes him special."

"It's natural because Sam and I are friends. I'm in show business, he's in showbiz, I think that's the nature of the business," aniya.

"It was the audience saying, 'Kiss, kiss, kiss!' You gotta please the people. I try to be a good sport. I'm really shy and I'm a private person but I try to be a good sport," aniya.
Marie admitted that she still communicates with Sam. Aware din daw si Sam that she's coming and staying in the country for a few months.
"Yes, he's aware I'm here, [although it was] hard to get in touch with him because communication lines were bogged down when I left Japan. We don't really get into details about our work, but I'm sure he knows that I'm coming to the Philippines. Even if I don't have too many details about it, I was just kinda going day by day with the sked."
Is Sam one of the reasons she wants to try her luck in the Philippines?
"I would say, more than anything, it was the fans," sabi ni Marie. "It was the fans telling me, 'Please come here. Please do some concerts. Please give us an album.' It was really the fans asking me for it.
"Sam is very supportive of my career and it's really nice to have people I know here. It's a foreign country and I don't speak Tagalog unfortunately, so it's nice to know people here and he can help me out."
COMMITMENT. Nang tanungin namin if she's ready for a commitment right now, hindi naman itinanggi ni Marie na pinag-iisipan na niya ito sa ngayon.
"I've been thinking about that because I'm 28, so I should be thinking about that. But I'm travelling so much. I don't know how I would make it work, it'll be tough.
"The secret is I'm single, I'm very much single. I think I'm at a point in life where I just wanna meet a lot of people. For most of my life, I was not interested in boys, it was just a career for me.
"Now I feel it's time for me to open my eyes and see whom I could be compatible with," saad niya.

Gretchen Barretto graced the 9th Gawad Tanglaw Awards last March 17 to pick up trophies for two TV projects she did last year. Her top-rating teleserye Magkaribal won as Best Drama Series, while her portrayal in the ‘Larawan’ episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya earned her the Best Actress in a Single Performance nod. Gretchen told reporters during the Gawad Tanglaw Awards, “Nagpapasalamat ako kayDirek Nuel (Naval, her director in Magkaribal and the MMK episode) for always being patient with me, for always giving his best as my director. Also to the creative team, sa ABS-CBN. Salamat sa magagandang proyektong ibinibigay niyo sa akin.”Gretchen is set to make a comeback on primetime TV with a new teleserye titled Alta wherein she will co star with Angelica Panganiban, KC Concepcion, Zanjoe Marudo, and Sam Milby. Gretchen shared thatAlta is set to begin taping after the Holy Week and is tentatively scheduled to air by June. According to her, a workshop is scheduled for all the stars of theteleserye, and as early as now, Gretchen is very much excited to befriending her co stars.
“Hindi pa kami nakakapag bonding kasi busy kami sa kanya-kanya naming buhay. But hopefully very soon,kapag nag start na kaming mag workshop tuloy tuloy na kaming magkakasama. I’m looking forward to working with them. There are so many thing I want to know about them. Parang ang nangyari noon sa Magkaribal. Sa simula nai intimidate pa kami sa isa’t isa pero later on nung naging close na lahat, talagang super close lahat.I’m looking forward to that.”
Knowing that she is about to live a busy life again very soon, Gretchen revealed that rest and relaxation she gets at the moment is very precious. She also shared her current work out plan to stay in shape for her TV roles. “Panay ang exercise ko. I do pilates. I also run and I do TRX. To get ready for Alta. Kaya fit ako ngayon, ha ha ha!”
Aside from Alta, Gretchen said that ABS-CBN has granted her request to do another MMK episode, still withDirek Nuel. She wasn’t shy to admit that she loves taking home trophies for an MMK episode. “Humihingi rin ako ng isa pang MMK episode this year, of course with Direk Nuel again. Para naman next year meron kami ulit panglaban sa awards. Naghahanap ng materyal si Direk Nuel. Hopefully bago mag air ang Alta may bagong MMK akong maihahatid sa lahat.” Gretchen won a back-to-back trophies as Best Actress in a Single Performance from the PMPC Star Awards in 2009 and 2010, both for MMK.
