Sam Milby back on the grind

This series of photos shows Sam Milby fit and fabulous, ready for the projects lined up for him
MANILA, Philippines - He is not what you can consider a sensational heartthrob who took a backseat for some needed rest. He was just busy doing corporate shows and attending to other commitments that were basically out of mainstream TV.

And perhaps that loaded schedule turned out as a significant limelight break for Sam Milby, one of Pinoy Big Brother house’s most accomplished ex-residents, as he is now back in the thick of things, with a couple of teleserye and movie projects and an Asian-wide release album plan out to make the young 2013 a major turnaround from his supposed inactivity in the past two years.

“I can say that the desire to grow has never been this great,” he told reporters during a snack chat last Friday afternoon on the 14th floor of ABS-CBN’s ELJ building.

To make the point how busy he is, The STAR found out Sam was just making use of his spare time to talk to media as in the evening of that same rainy afternoon. According to him, he was set to record the vocal track for his version of Nasa ‘Yo Na Ang Lahat, a love song initially associated to the voice of current toast Daniel Padilla and which he would record as requested by Star Cinema. His take will serve as theme song to the upcoming movie of the same title starring Daniel and Kathryn Bernardo.

Asked if he is experiencing some kind of difficulty singing Tagalog tracks, being a Fil-Am who grew up in the States, he replied, “Walang problem sa akin mag-record in Tagalog kasi nakabunganga ang bibig ko when I’m singing. Kaya di ako nahihirapan.”

It was noticeable that he was trying his best to speak in Tagalog even if a question is stated in English — obviously part of his routine practicing the Filipino lingo. Amusingly though, when he uttered the word nakabunganga, he was actually pertaining to a singer’s natural tendency to open wide the mouth when performing, especially in the studio. Thus, it becomes easier to pronounce the words unlike when one is casually conversing and there’s no melody to go with the sentences.

Sam is behind the hit songs Mahal Pa Rin and Hindi Kita Iiwan, his first single off his Be Mine album and which won Best Ballad at the 26th Awit Awards. The trophy was a big dream realized, and in a way boosted his confidence to work on a new album care of Star Records and to be promoted in neighboring Asian countries.

Sam related, “I think I’ve grown as a singer, having discovered the limitations of my voice.”

If his recording career is still on for greater heights, his acting profession, a craft which he believes has better exposure, is the one eating up his time. He is working on two Kapamilya series, the romantic comedy Kahit Konting Pagtingin, and the Judy Ann Santos starrer Against All Odds.

Caress Caballero, artist handler of Cornerstone which manages Sam’s career, said, “We’re amazed with his professionalism. Minsan, ang pack-up niya sa isang teleserye ay 5 a.m. then ang call time sa other series ay 7 a.m. He had to take a bath during the lull. When we asked how tired he was, his reply was, ‘Mabuti nga may work ako.’ He never complains.”

Sam also makes sure to improve his Tagalog as it helps him perform better on the set. He reveals to be regularly doing Tagalog warm-ups, Tagalog tongue-twisters and Read-aloud exercises.

Sam was born in Ohio and moved to Manila in 2005. He easily became the most popular face among the short-list of participants that embraced instant fame during the highly-followed first run of reality TV PBB with the anthemic Pinoy Ako.

The only problem, if you may call it, for having two teleseryes with tapings ongoing practically within similar time frame is, Sam’s having a hard time adjusting from one character to another. He admitted, “Sometimes I would arrive on the set either of Against All Odds or Kahit Konting Pagtingin asking, ‘Sino ba ako?’ Light kami sa KKP and then you can feel the heaviness in Against All Odds. So it becomes challenging. First time in my career na magkasabay ang teleseryes I’m working on.”

But of course, Sam is always ready to face challenges, whether on TV or the big screen. He just finished shooting Death March, his fourth indie film, and will soon begin working on a movie with Anne Curtis.

Small wonder he has remained popular among fans. He does not have that star complex and he seems the approachable type. During the presscon, entertainment reporters comfortably posed with Sam for souvenir shots, a proof of his charisma. He is still one of the most followed Pinoys on Twitter with 2.2 million followers as of last month.
